Hey everyone,

I know in the Bible Jesus says that anyone who is ashamed of him will be ashamed of by God. When i think about how this applies to everyday life, i get worried. I mean im by no means ashamed to be a Christian. My dilemna is kinda like this. Say for example i hear someone say the Lord’s name in vain. Am i supposed to correct them right away? If i dont am i ashamed of what they will think of me and of Jesus? I mean they probably know anyway? This is a question that has been bothering me. Thanks for all answers. It can apply to other sins too.

I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you. People generally don’t look that deep into it. If I were for example to use your God’s name in vein it would most likely be as a figure of speech. I would probably do it again if you tried to correct me. You should be comfortable enough with yourself and your own belief system to not worry about such trivial matters.

i think this will help answer your question partly -
gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=14832583

other then that, it’s possible that if you fear speaking up about something, whether it’s admonishing a sinner, or defending God, you may be afraid simply out of a lack of confidence in your ability to defend and explain your position on the matter, in which case the answer is simply to learn,
the more you know about your religion, your morals, sins, church doctrine, catechism,and whatever else, then the more confidence you will have,
on the other hand, even if you do have a good education in your religion and even the confidence to speak up, it’s also possible to be reluctant because of a lack of love for God, in which case you would fear speaking up because of self love, and how others might look at you(or look down on you) for speaking out against them or for believing what you know they think of as silly or stupid, whereas if you had a great love for God, it would be Gods view of you that would matter most.

of course i can see from what you have said that you do love God and you do worry how He sees you, so i think the best advice i can give you is just to pray to God for help, ask Him to give you courage and wisdom, a perfect prayer for that is the serenity prayer actually -
*God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next. Amen. *
it’s good to have a prayer regimen every day, the morning offering, guardian angel prayer, acts of faith, hope, and charity, the rosary, angelus, all of which you can find in this little prayer book(one i always use) -

and regarding such things as people taking Gods name in vain, a good thing to do when people do that, is to counteract the blaspheme by saying an act of love, such as “Jesus mercy” or “Jesus i love Thee” (in your mind of course)
or another prayer you can pray for someone that offends you or hurts you or says something bad, is - “Lord, make them happy in this life and in the next” and by that, you will please God by your charity, and appease His anger for the sin of your neighbor, and you will be helping you neighbor by your prayer, and by saying that also you will feel comforted.

well, probably more then i needed to say, but i hope this helps anyways (: tc

I’ve finally gotten old enough that I don’t much care what others think of me.
But it upsets me when I hear Christ’s name misused, someone I love whose name is used as a swear word. Ugh.
My supervisor has done it on occasion. I’ve made the sign of the cross in reparation. I don’t know if anyone noticed or not, but I haven’t heard her do it since then. That’s a silent sign that signifies what you think, yet it isn’t verbal so it’s not confrontational.

Viki63 took the words right out of my mouth. The sign of the cross is efficacious as a reparation to the Lord and as a silent admonishment. You don’t have to be a theologian, scholar or clergy, just someone in Love with the Lord.

Easy.

I try to speak up… i say He didn’t have anything to do with that…I have noticed that the Lord’s name doesn’t get used as often in my presence among my friends after saying that to them.

Honestly, I think it depends on who the person is that used God’s name in vain. If it is someone I don’t know very well or at all, I wouldn’t say anything, but instead I would say a prayer of reparation. If it’s someone I do know well, I would say something.
