Shamrock Day, anyone?

It would seem as if a new secular holiday is in the process of being formed. I have no idea what it might be like in your area, but a lot of stores are now having Shamrock Day Sales, Shamrock Day Specials, and (as a way to give to charities ) $1 Shamrocks with your name on to be posted in the store window.☘️

Lots of green over all this, although Albertson’s Supermarkets not only gives you a green shamrock for a $1 donation, but a golden shamrock for a $5 donation.:shamrock2: :shamrock2:

And more and more schools will be celebrating Shamrock Day (17 March) to avoid the use of that awful sectarian word “Saint”, thus protecting the Children from whatever.

Obviously, I will be skipping the drinking of green beer, and will not be eating corned beef and cabbage because I hate the stuff. The cats will not be fed green kibble, nor decorated with green ribbons. (I value an unpunctured skin.):rolleyes:

I do hope to be able to go to Mass that day in celebration of Saint you-know-who. (Hint: he was not born in Ireland.)👍

Only if the celebration is translated in your area, otherwise it will be Mass for Monday of Holy Week. :irish1:

Maybe that is why all the “Shamrock Day” stuff – Those institutions know that a certain saint’s feast is conflicted this year…?

Sad, isn’t it? How everything that was once “Christian” is now being secularized. This reminds me of how “Easter Vacation” is now called “Spring Vacation”. Don’t even get me started on what they’ve attempted to do to Christmas the past couple of years.:nope:

Well, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Washington, D.C. will be celebrating on 14 March.

I wonder if they also got a dispensation from eating only fish that day?
 
I have noticed some “Shamrock Day” ads, now that you mention it. But that’s OK; St. Patrick’s Day is the 14th this year. So we can actually celebrate both, adn spend a happy Shamrock Day telling people why the symbol of St. Patrick’s Day is the shamrock. If your town is much like mine you will even get to tell people what a shamrock is until their eyes glaze over.
I haven’t found anyone except Knights of Columbus doing anything for St. Patrick’s Day around here at all except a few sales.

It is Evacuation Day commemorating the expulsion of the British from Boston early in the Revolutionary War [No it is not an ad for Ex-Lax.] After Ethan Allen captured Fort Ticonderoga he sent the cannon to fortify Dorcheste Heights, which commanded Boston Harbor and forced the British Fleet to withdraw. [When I lived in Massachusetts there was a stone marker opposite my house which commemorated the passage of the oxen dragging the cannon by that point.]

is celebrated that way because the Irish wanted a celebration that day and couldn’t get a state holiday for St Patrick.

In point of fact, Henry Knox went to Ticonderoga,with a party of men, and brought the guns back.
When they arrived, the fortifications were put up in one night…The British awoke to the sight of fully fortified & armed breastworks, where the night before, there had been nothing.
And if anybody doesn’t think this has anything to do with St Patrick, let us remember of which:irish1: :irish2: ☘️ :irish3: :kissme: :shamrock2: country he is the patron!!!👍 👍

When feast days fall during Holy Week they get transferred elsewhere. For example, St. Joseph is normally celebrated on March 19, but this year will be on March 15 to avoid Holy Week.
 
As I recall, St Patrick used the Shamrock as a symbol of the Trinity. Maybe the Sunday after Penetcost would be more appropriate for Shamrock day.:rolleyes:

Haven’t heard of Shamrock day over here apart from this forum last-year, I’ll treat it like happy holidays and the whole shebang.

Anyway it’s celebrated this Saturday 15th because it rubs shoulders with “Holy Week” and the Priest said, "no Saints feast-day has precedence over Holy Week.

As for the other, maybe we could call it “oh what a sham day” because that’s what it is.🤷
 
I have been trying to put together a combo St. Patrick’s Day/St. Joseph’s Day picnic and haven’t been able to find any decorations for St. Joseph’s Day whatsoever (in this area it’s unsurprising – few Catholics and fewer Italian-Americans yet, but still with the burgeoning holiday decor industry I thought it worth a try), and what small bits of St. Patrick’s Day stuff I could find was almost all degrading, insulting garbage. Not just irreverent, but derogatory and ugly. Oh, well, I’ll keep trying. The show must go on.
 
I found some simple green banners and things like that and I have some good clean fun to set up.🙂 How many other people are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day today?
