In commemorating Holy Week, let us share a few images of the beauty of our Churches. However bias this may be, I don’t think anything can beat the design of our Syro Malabar vestments :D. Feel free to share whichever you find, whether Catholic, Eastern Catholic, Orthodox, etc.

What is the object on the floor they all seem to be venerating?

I’ve always been a bit jealous of the consistent beauty of eastern vesture, at least inasmuch as you will occasionally see it.

I love the cope. It is not the best picture, but here is an old pastor of ours baptizing our youngest.

I am very fond of the set used here:

It is rather unique and what I would noobishly call 19th century modern aesthetic, but I like it very much. It’s unique without being ugly or tradition-hating.

Thomas,

Isn’t it really hot in most of India. How on Earth do priests and deacons deal with the weather and all those heavy looking vestments?

The object is a veil with the St. Thomas Cross but they are not venerating it but using it in a celebration. What is taking place is a ceremony known as Invoking the Holy Spirit during the Syro Malabar Raza Qurbana (equivalent to Latin High Mass). During the celebration priests, deacons, and other clergy prostrate numerous times before the veil, calling down the Holy Spirit, all the while singing liturgical hymns and reciting numerous prayers.

I believe the vestments are made of a light cloth. As for the heat, there are often many fans turned on in the sanctuary, also the doors and windows of the church will be left open.

I love bell shaped chasubles.
So do I. I like them much more than the abreriviated Filddle back chasubles. But they had their uses in the day before churches had air conditioning. They look much cooler. 🙂
Nothing over the arms.

The only time I have seen a fiddle back worn was not in a Catholic church, but in an ultra-high Anglo Catholic church (Anglican).

To YoungTrad,
Be warned, by ignorance is showing.
Concerning that first picture you posted, do those two on the sides qualify as Borromeo type chasubles, or are they another thing entirely (being worn by, I presume, acting deacons). The sleeves look a little long for a normal fiddle back.
They almost look art deco save the center one, which is my favorite of the bunch.

The men on the sides are deacons or serving as deacons for Solemn High Mass. They are wearing Dalmatics or a dalmatic and a tunicle.

Dalmatics are worn by deacons, and tunicles are worn by sub-deacons.

I see. I thought not, but I figured I’d might as well ask. Thanks.

I’m not generally a red fan, but I have to say that my priest & deacon looked quite splendid in their attire on Palm Sunday. I still haven’t gotten over how gorgeously decorated Catholic churches look. I still gawk whenever I walk in.

My parish priest is awesome. On All Soul’s Day, he wore the black robes. The one deacon commented that he hasn’t seen something like that since the 60s.

Those Syro robes are neat looking too. I have zero personal connection to the Eastern Catholic Churches, but I happened to choose Ephrem Mary as my Confirmation name. I really liked the story & personality of St. Ephrem.

Deacon Stephen (then Subdeacon) has the wonderful white dalmatic and stole…
And that blue Saccos set is gorgeous, too.

Pictures are making the forum format go haywire.
I think we have a thread on eastern vestments specifically, you may want to revive that.
I especially like how the hood of the cowl (unsure of terminology) is worn.
