When I was growing up, my mom would make a 3-Kings cake every year for dinner on Epiphany. She was a widow with a big family, so the cake was either home made or out of a box and nothing special, except there would be 3 uncooked beans added to the batter to represent the kings. We all hoped to find a bean in our piece of cake since the finder was said to have good luck in the coming year (in a childish non-serious way). I don’t know where the tradition came from as I’m primarily descended from Germans and Scots.
