Barber’s Agnus Dei is very moving! I’m glad, however, that we don’t attempt to sing this version at Mass.

In case you didn’t know, Barber’s Agnus Dei is simply a recasting of his own Adagio for strings, one of the most heartbreaking pieces of music ever written. It was played at President Kennedy’s funeral, and played a prominent part in the soundtrack to the film Platoon.

Here is the finest performance I have ever heard of the Barber Adagio:

In memory of Senator John McCain, who died this evening. Requiescat in pace, dear sir.

Today we had the distinct “pleasure” of welcoming Babel into the Mass with “Lord, When You Came to the Seashore” being sung alternately in English and then Spanish, for reasons completely unknown rather than flagrant virtue-signaling.

Then to top it all off, we ended with the ever-saccharine “Prayer of St. Francis.”

When I was in the Episcopal Church I loved “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” … I have not heard it once since I became Catholic though…

I have seen it in some Catholic hymnals so it might be the preference of whoever does the music at your parish.

This is the one I wanted to post, but I have no idea why the video won’t appear.
