Sharing cable a sin?

I live on the first floor of our land lady’s house. We split the cable and internet bill 50/50, so we get cable in our first floor apartment, which is part of their residence. She had implied that she didn’t think the cable company was a fan of the arrangement. Is sharing the cable with the homeowners a sin?

I have no idea, what is the arrangement with the utility? is the house wired to service each living space and does the bill reflect that? If you did not make the arrangement with the cable company and can’t see the bill, you can’t answer it, but you do have the right to ask your landlord point blank if the arrangement is legal, and if not, pay for installation of service to your flat.
 
I don’t think it’s wrong. Your landlord paid for one floor and receives reception on one floor. If she drills holes in her floor to provide reception for you guys that’s up to her, she is still getting what she paid for, so i don’t see anything wrong. The cable company might not like it, but I don’t think it is inherently evil.

Venial sin maybe.
 
I would agree that it depends on the billing arrangement with the cable company. Some charge more for a second “box” or decoder within one residence, some don’t care. I grew up when TVs were not “cable ready”.

Morally, it doesn’t make much difference if you’re a tenant or were part of her family…if the cable company charges more for more than one TV hooked up to their service for each residence, then yep, it’s immoral. If not, it’s not.

I think it’d be different if you had a detached apartment, say, over the garage.
 
If you knowingly attempt to cheat the cable company out of its right to charge you separately for their services, yes that is a sin. That’s cheating and fraud. Ignorance of cable company policy in these situations is no excuse to defraud them.

Call the cable company and ask them if what you are currently doing is the acceptable thing to do. If they say no, then do the right thing and pay the full amount. If they say yes, then not to worry.
 
I do not know where you live but where I live it is you can split the cable bill between people who are living in the same house that has been converted into apartments but I would check and make sure that she has a simillar arrangement with this particular cable company where i live the people who are paying the bill get their own copy of the bill telling them how much they are suppose to pay and the land lord and the cable company have to be aware of the situation
 
As long cable providers will put analog channels on their line, it’s easily to split these signals. Based on copyrights, It’s illegal to share cable tv in an appartment building or with the neighbors. 1 Exception (in fact not, but …): it’s permitted within the same household, but with the upcoming digitalisation, it’s not possible anymore. Why ? For EACH TV you’ll need a seperate cable-box + subscription (included), meaning you no longer will be able to share digital tv.

I found out from the landlady that the company set up the TV in the apartment when their son was living there. The company considered the house a single residence at the time and they were entitled to so many connections. I believe at this point the company would consider us a separate residence so I’ve just been watching the local channels that would be free if we got them through the antenna (we don’t get most of them very well.)
 
ethically is likely wrong. Legally depends if the building is classified as a homestead or as an apartment building.
 
You are required to pay per connection. I think the posters before me established that your arrangement with the landlord is wrong.
