Hello all!

I understand that downloading music illegally is a form (however small…venial) of stealing as is burning discs for friends of music that I have legally obtained (purchased). However, I am wondering if it is okay to burn music that I have obtained for free from artists who are putting out their music for free… Sites such as Purevolume and Last.Fm and others do so…

The only possible reason I can think of it being wrong is the site would not generate an additional “download” for the artist’s knowledge. This seems like such a small issue compared to the exposure that I may actually be giving the artist, however, by handing his or her music onto a friend that I can hardly justify it as being sinful, even venial.

Thoughts?

God bless!

According to the internet, burning a cd for someone else appears to be illegal and therefore wrong. Burning a playlist for your own use is apparently ok. Many people suggested that if you want to share a song with someone you get them a itunes card so they can download it. Now if you have recorded a live performance say, and you made copies of that recording (such as yourself or a friend playing music or singing) that would not be a problem. The issue really seems to be the original artist getting paid fairly for their works of music.

Hope that helps. Who knew??? Google is an amazing tool!

Why not ask the artists if they mind? Then you’ll know for sure.

Directly from the mouth of one legendary musician:
*
“[Fans] can do anything they want with my stuff. If they want to listen to my music, or look at my art, or download a poster or a book, I say go for it.

I’m not going to get paid anyway. Do you think Warner Brothers is ever going to pay me a penny for any records I ever made, or Slash Records? I don’t get paid for those. They’re protecting the rights they own on my work so that they can make money, not that I can get paid. They don’t pay me, the laws are not in my favor. …]

It’s really difficult to get paid. So, yeah, I say, “Steal it all. Steal it all.” I make my monthly bills. I don’t care. I don’t need more than what I need. I’m not looking to be a millionaire. It would be nice if those situations weren’t corrupt.” *

Because some of these bands are rather…well…big-time bands for what it is worth. They may never even see a notice from me. For example, Ocean Is Theory and the Icarus Account currently have free songs for download on Purevolume. If I were to attempt to get into contact with them, I may never hear back because of their large fan base.

And I understand that burning music to a cd is illegal if I give it to other people and the music was obtained through purchase; but, this is not music that I am purchasing, the artist is GIVING AWAY the music… So I am confused… I really am thinking it is not a big deal in the slightest and if anything I would be helping the artist by giving him or her more exposure.

If it were an artist who is already signed sworn to a record deal where he or she is only giving music away through paid means, then yes, I understand the music I purchase is for me to use alone (or in company but not to distribute)…

I don’t know… Sometimes life is just becoming overwhelming with rules and all it entails… Yes this is clearly beginning to pick at other topics… I really just want to go to Heaven and talk with my Savior… 😦
