Sharing our Sunday

I think it would be good for us (Mormons-Catholics) to share the message we each received today. Not to compete in the message that we all received today, but rather to open our hearts in order to bring to the forefront Christ in our Church / lives today. What hit you specifically today at Church / Mass? Today Catholic throughout the world will focus on these scriptures.

Reading I
Sir 27:30—28:7

Wrath and anger are hateful things,
yet the sinner hugs them tight.
The vengeful will suffer the LORD’s vengeance,
for he remembers their sins in detail.
Forgive your neighbor’s injustice;
then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven.
Could anyone nourish anger against another
and expect healing from the LORD?
Could anyone refuse mercy to another like himself,
can he seek pardon for his own sins?
If one who is but flesh cherishes wrath,
who will forgive his sins?
Remember your last days, set enmity aside;
remember death and decay, and cease from sin!
Think of the commandments, hate not your neighbor;
remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 103:1-2, 3-4, 9-10, 11-12

Reading** II**
Rom 14:7-9

Brothers and sisters:
None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself.
For if we live, we live for the Lord,
and if we die, we die for the Lord;
so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.
For this is why Christ died and came to life,
that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

Gospel
Mt 18:21-35

Peter approached Jesus and asked him,
“Lord, if my brother sins against me,
how often must I forgive?
As many as seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.
That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king
who decided to settle accounts with his servants.
When he began the accounting,
a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount.
Since he had no way of paying it back,
his master ordered him to be sold,
along with his wife, his children, and all his property,
in payment of the debt.
At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’
Moved with compassion the master of that servant
let him go and forgave him the loan.
When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants
who owed him a much smaller amount.
He seized one of his fellow servants and started to choke him, demanding,
‘Pay back what you owe.’
Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’
But he refused.
Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison
until he paid back the debt.
Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened,
they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master
and reported the whole affair.
His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant!
I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to.
Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant,
as I had pity on you?’
Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers
until he should pay back the whole debt.
So will my heavenly Father do to you,
unless each of you forgives your brother.

Went to Mass yesterday I was just hit by everything especially what I got out of the sermon about forgiveness wow hit me hard 🙂

It hit me as well, so many times I am the servent who after being freed of his dept goes out and trys to collect from others that owe him. How fast we can forget.

Today’s scripture, Christ’s Gospel, and homily by our Parish Priest is pretty much summed up with the quote :

"Jesus came to pay a debt He didn’t owe, because we owed a debt we couldn’t pay"…Unknown

**After we receive this gift, our debt forgiven what do we do with it? How do we treat others? How are we with Forgiveness and reconciliation when it comes to those that owe us, that may have hurt us? What about our own short comings, do we see God’s forgiveness as something we earn or something given freely? Today was neat because if made me think of God dying for me, forgiving my debt. Just like the Master did with his sergeant in the Gospel today. The Master is God, who laid down his life for His lost sheep. Not because of anything we did or did not do, but simply because he loves us. **

God Bless

Why haven’t any LDS shared their Sunday with us?
Brother Paul, be patient. LDS spend three hours at their chapel on Sunday. Sacrament meeting and then religion classes. Sunday is set aside for learning and reading scriptures, etc. You will most likely hear from LDS tomorrow. How many of us Catholics would spend three hours every Sunday in church and then go again several times during the week to fulfill “calling” duties? I, for one, would be too tired to post after all the “church going”.

I enjoyed your message on forgiveness. I would love to have a discussion on what it is to forgive others. I have taught a lesson on this that I think really challenged everyone (myself included). I still do not know if I go too far (in what I see in the scriptures), but if you are interested we can discuss that. It would be quite interesting I think.

Let me see.

Sacrament meeting was about covenants (well, it always is, but after “the Sacrament” the talks were about covenants). After “the Sacrament” we were addressed by two young ladies (one of whom has Downs Syndrome). Neither of them plumbed any theological depths, but both of them were wonderful. The third speaker talked about our covenants with God. She even mentioned the important truth that we CHOOSE to make these agreements, but we imperfectly perform our part. And not only does God perfectly perform His part He provides help (energy) for us to provide our part. Then we had a piano solo of America the Beautiful in remembrance of those who died four years ago. The last speaker spoke about the covenant we call the Law of Consecration. He mentioned that he didn’t think that he (or the rest of us) really understood what this Law meant in its fullness, and how it related to the giving of our substance to the less fortunate.

On to Sunday School (second hour). Sunday School was largely historical today. We discussed the succession issues and resolutions after the death of the prophet Joseph. Our stake patriarch mentioned the political aspects associated with the expulsion of the saints, specifically mentioning the perception by non-LDS that LDS were in favor of a free state. I talked to him afterwards because this was a recent area of my study. He is a reader!

Priesthood (our third hour) was about testimony. We specifically talked about Matthew 16:18 and what is the rock. I mentioned to the class that Protestants generally embrace rock=Christ. Catholics generally embrace rock=Peter. And then the instructor said that LDS embrace rock=Revelation. I turned to the Elder’s Quorum president and told him that actually LDS general authorities have embraced all three of these at various times. And that the Bible symbolism as a whole points to rock=Christ, Bible symbolism specifically linked to this one passage quite powerfully points to rock=Peter (kepha = kepha), and that grammatically I think Rock=revelation is most clear; but that all three are good LDS understandings. We spoke about how no power can take away ones testimony, but that we can neglect (and ultimately put down) our testimony.

I would love to speak about forgiveness and reconciliation. I would love to hear about your most inner feeling when it comes to this. For me it is center in my mind and soul. For me it is of Christ, it is Christ. If we can cloth ourselves in it we can come in line with the Grace of God and do many good works for others for Christ while in this Grace.

** I believe it is the peace of Christ given. It is the weapon of all weapons against Satan, but should never be thought of as such because we would not want to give Satan the attention he desires, he is not that important. In other words we should not care that Satan hates it when we forgive one another, what we should care about is that we do it out of our love for Jesus. While I adore Christ and the Cross, Satan hates the Cross most, because even his hatred for Christ is set aside and it boils over at the thought of his defeat. **

Hope that makes sense.

I am kind of excited to be encouraged to talk about forgiveness. I agree with you that the answer to all forgiveness problems is in Christ and the atonement. I think I will start a new thread. I will start off with the portion of my lesson that I believe leads to the toughest part about truly forgiving. I will skip the “little solution” I offered and provide it later. I still think the fullest forgiveness MAY go beyond this “little solution.” I am pretty convinced that what may be the fullest for Catholics is identical to what may be the fullest for LDS, but I will let someone make any clarifications on what Catholics believe or rather what they individually think Catholics should believe (only a few who I have shared this with have been willing to walk with me to the scary places it MAY take us).
