Marilyn Manson - the self-proclaimed “Antichrist Superstar” and certified minister in the Church of Satan - has been cast in ‘The New Pope’ - followup to ‘The Young Pope’, a series in which a young, extremely radical conservative Pope “rules by fear.”

While Jude Law is a fine actor, I’ll confess being a wee bit disappointed.

Maybe Malk will be playing the New Pope. “Being Pope Malkovich”…you go through a door behind the filing cabinet in the rectory of a historic cathedral and you find yourself inside the Pope for 15 minutes. Now picturing all of CAF standing in line to have their 15 minutes as Pope…I can just imagine the stuff people would be trying to do/ change in that 15 minutes.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing from a Catholic perspective?

I thought Jude Law was in The Young Pope.
The New Pope is a different show isn’t it?

The show is total fiction anyway and it would be interesting to see if the guy could actually act rather than just appear in his Marilyn Manson persona with makeup, etc.

After all, Bowie played Pontius Pilate and Alice Cooper played King Herod and both of them did a good job.

It says Jude Law is reprising his role as Pope Pius XIII and will be joined by John Malkovich who has been seen in early ‘The New Pope’ photos wearing similar vestments. 🤷‍♀️

In early casting photos of Manson in his role, he’s wearing his standard makeup and looking very typical Manson. It’ll be interesting to see what his character is.

It illustrates the secular world’s continued fascination with the Pope and his supposed machinations.

It’s a bit strange to me. I don’t think of Popes, at least not current, non-historical-drama Popes, as fuel for cable miniseries. Other than Pope JPII bringing down Communism, and Pope Pius XII standing up to the Nazis (or according to his detractors, doing the opposite, though we know that isn’t true), Popes are pretty boring to the non-Catholic world I would think.

Sounds like garbage. The plot of the New Pope was to paint a conservative Pope in a bad light. HBO tends to ruin things. Game of Thrones would have been amazing if they hadn’t turned it into a cheesy porno.

Yeah, they’re real good at ruining every good story line they come across with gratuitous smut and gore.

I know. Dirty, filthy psychological assault.

Move over “Touched by an Angel.” That’s an awesome idea! You should totally pitch it.

I am no fan of Marilyn Manson’s (Brian Warner) music, but I recently watched an interview with him, and he comes across as quite intelligent, courteous, and well-spoken. Not at all what I expected. I thought he’d be some kind of vapid druggie.

I have only seen clips from The Young Pope, while debating whether it’s worth my while to rent it from the local Family Video store, and make that kind of time investment. I did this with Breaking Bad over the summer and spent several days binge-watching it (Netflix, not DVD), watched the entire series, wanted to get it out of the way before we began the homeschooling year. I am not a big fan of television in general (mostly just the news, documentaries, and Jeopardyjust how much money is that boy going to win?), but Breaking Bad was an exception.

And is it just me, but does Jude Law’s “Pope Pius XIII” come across as a thinly veiled surrogate for Donald Trump?

That movie was as strange and yet as original and creative as any I’ve ever seen.

Sort of related- Paul Stanley of KISS fame was Phantom of the Opera for a musical off broadway run a few times. Was interesting seeing the KISS Army fans in the theatre.
