"...she continues to reveal herself to all of us..." Pope's homily at Guadalupe

…Just as she made herself present to little Juan, so too she continues to reveal herself to all of us, especially to those who feel, like him, “worthless” (cf. Nican Mopohua, 55). This specific choice, we might call it preferential, was not against anyone but rather in favour of everyone. The little Indian Juan who called himself a “leather strap, a back frame, a tail, a wing, oppressed by another’s burden” (Ibid.), became “the ambassador, most worthy of trust”.

On that morning in December 1531, the first miracle occurred which would then be the living memory of all this Shrine protects. On that morning, at that meeting, God awakened the hope of his son Juan, and the hope of his People. On that morning, God roused the hope of the little ones, of the suffering, of those displaced or rejected, of all who feel they have no worthy place in these lands. On that morning, God came close and still comes close to the suffering but resilient hearts of so many mothers, fathers, grandparents who have seen their children leaving, becoming lost or even being taken by criminals…

Thanks for this. I will have to read and research the whole trip of our Holy Father. I think I may have jumped on the bandwagon, criticizing him in my heart for what I read in the Headlines about him going to Mexico to show solidarity with the immigrants. It was loaded Headlines and I fell for it EVEN THOUGH I know better…! Many of us may have fallen for inflammatory headlines…

How good it is and what a grace for any of us to admit our mistakes! I tend to avoid the secular media’s "opinions about the Pope or the Church. While I read some and listen to some news on cable I am always wanting to see the exact text from which they quote. Even then, I wonder sometimes about translations from the Pope’s own language into English.

It is good to check with good Catholic resources when seeking the Truth of any situation. There is no substitute for Scripture as a Primary resource, then the Catechism and documents of the Magisterium. Sometimes one look is worth a thousand words and when I saw the picture posted on Zenit of the Pope gazing on the icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe, it said a lot to me. See HERE

Zenit.org has several articles on the Pope’s visit to Mexico. I haven’t finished reading all but I did post two: one on his message to Bishops of Mexico and this one on his homily at the Mass in the Basilica of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. May our Mother Mary gather all of us, and help us to hear her words deeply in our hearts: “Am I not your Mother?” How can we not love her in return, who stood beneath the cross for love of God and us?
