She wants to come to mass!

During a discussion about liturgy, a priest once told me it is nearly impossible to explain liturgy (including, and perhaps especially, the Mass) to someone who has not experienced it first. I would wholeheartedly agree with that from my own experience. I knew virtually nothing about the Catholic Church, much less the Mass before I went for the first time. I accepted an invitation from a co-worker and the only thing she said beforehand was (1) not to feel self-conscious if I didn’t follow along with everything (though I certainly tried!); (2) instruction to not partake in communion; and (3) how to follow along with the missal provided in the pew. I did not understand what was going on, but I sensed it was “big.” By the grace of God, that was enough to spark my thirst for more and I asked many questions of my friend (God bless her for being so patient!). There is so much richness and meaning, from the meaning and use of holy water, the gestures, the statutes, the candles, altar, etc., much less the liturgy itself and the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. I would suggest telling her just enough so she isn’t too self-conscious, let God work in her heart, and then let her come to you with the inevitable, and numerous, questions!

God bless you for reaching out to your friend; I will be praying for you both!
