Who may and may not be gathered around the altar? Should children’s plays and singing events involve them being assembled right up there at, beside, and behind the altar (with props, streaming decorations, and colored lights?) I recently attended at children’s Mass that went this way, and not long before this a “living rosary” that involved children and adults representing the beads of a rosary, each holding candles and reciting a prayer at their turn. Two of the children spent the entire time standing behind the altar. Some candle wax even dropped onto the altar cloth, and there was much giggling and stifled laughter from that direction.
If this sort of thing isn’t okay, what is the best way to go about moving towards improvement?
