In spite of the issues of theology and history betweeen Luther and the Catholic Church, it is important to remember that an extremely key dispute has to some degree been resolved. In short, Catholicism and Lutheranism agree on justification or the means to salvation. My stab at summarizing it is we’re save by grace which is exhibited through faith and good works. Saved by faith alone and once saved always saved and the good works controversy somewhat boils down to semantics, misunderstanding of vocabulary and what is necessarily incorporated into the words and phrases of faith and good works.
