Does anyone know what part of shorter Christian prayer has the psalms and readings for feb 2nd? Or what week I’m supposed to be on? I used the Friday of week IV (I just got this book two weeks ago, hope I haven’t been in the wrong week) in place of the correct day, and I’ve searched through that tiny book and I still can’t find the correct day.

According to the calendar at Universalis: Calendar for 2021 2 February 2018 was during Psalm week 4. Psalm week 1 starts with Sunday 4 February 2018, 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time. This “Sunday” begins with the Evening Prayer I of Saturday Night, 3 February 2018.

Not sure how Shorter Christian Prayer works, but in the Liturgy of the Hours, Feb. 2nd is a feast and the festival psalms should be used along with the antiphons of the feast.

Shorter Christian Prayer doesn’t work for a lot of feasts and solemnities. You are often forced to resort to the weekday psalms/canticles.

One reason I ditched it early on, over a decade ago, and moved up to Christian Prayer.

I would suggest to OP @AmericanRose to do the same and use either Christian Prayer or the four-volume Liturgy of the Hours.

Thanks that’s good to know. While I have a TON of liturgical books and antiphonaries for the Office, Shorter Christian Prayer is one that I happen to not have.

I agree with your advice to the OP. Get the Real Deal! Personally I think the 4-volume is the one to get, though in French we have a cheaper option: Prière du temps present (which is the French Equivalent to Christian Prayer, i.e. the entire LOTH but without the readings for the Office of Readings), and “Livre des jours” which contains all the readings of the Office of Readings for every day of the year. The total price is about 1/2 the price of the French 4-volume LOTH, and other than a simplification for mid-day prayer (only one set of readings and collects), it is complete.

If you don’t say the Office of Readings, the one-volume Christian Prayer is less than $40 USD and comes with the complete texts for Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Night Prayer.

I don’t know your financial situation, and maybe $40 is too expensive at this time for you. But generally speaking, for this kind of book, this is a very reasonable price; it will fall right in the category of “money well spent”.

Of course, apps are available these days, but except when absolutely necessary, I would have nothing to do with them, even if free. But still, you can look at iBreviary for iPhone and Android.

I’m in my last year of highschool and I’m not able to get a job, so $40 is wayyyy too much. And I agree about the apps. They’re okay, but I prefer print.
