Shorts at Mass??

This was post #49. We are now up to #99. No one has provided teaching that shorts are not appropriate at Mass.

I am left to think that all the rhetoric about shorts lacking dignity or showing disrespect for the Mass is personal opinion. All have a right to their own opinion and should dress according his or her own morals and preferences.

One should not place judgements upon, or try to enforce his personal opinion on others.
Your are so right. I know someone who went to mass in shorts. It was the only thing they had. It was go in shorts or not at all. I think short were fine. We cannot see into each persons heart. I get horrified at the way people dress to and then I scold myself for I do not know their circumstance or heart.

Outer signs help the inner disposition of the soul, and are a consequence of us wanting to do and be our best for our Lord.

After all, when we go to Mass, we are meeting Christ our King. It is about an attitude of humility, reverence and preparing our hearts, so it does not seem extraordinary to then choose to wear modest and dignified clothing. It is mostly about Jesus, although I do think it is disrespectful to our priests for women to walk up to them with body parts uncovered that should be covered.

We can’t really say that external forms don’t matter; that it is only the internal heart that matters. Certainly the case of white sepulchres comes to mind, but what about the opposite–clean on the inside and rotten on the outside? Does it say anything?

Does it cause a stumble to anyone? Catholicism believes that matter and form do matter; it is why we have sacramentals.

Anyway… just a few random thoughts.

Well, now, shall I put on my flame-proof suit or go to sleep and come back tomorrow? 😃

I don’t wear shorts to Mass (or ever as I am self-conscious about my legs). I just don’t care what other people wear as long as it’s modest.
For this and all your other red-lettered comments…whatever

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with everyone.

This is an opinion poll.

It asked a question.

Members responded.

Wear what you like to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

There is no, absolutely no, excuse for women (or men) wearing shorts at Holy Mass. Not only is it disrespectful, it is an occasion of sin to others. Regardless of what people think nowadays, they do not have the “right” to wear what they want where they want.

We need to bring back some semblance of dignity. We hear so much of that word today, but truly, I’ve never encountered less of it in people.
I am well acquainted with high heat and humidity. It’s no excuse.

You’re just a product of your generation and the slovenly culture.

At first Lormar was saying that people do not have the “right” to wear what they want and insulted those who do not dress according to his standards.

He now states, “Wear what you like.”

I think that another came over to our side! 👍

You misunderstand me, dear.

I am not here to change your attitude or your mind. In God’s House, you should give Him the best in all ways. We never had a problem with people dressing in shorts before the sixties. No one would have ever dreamed of walking into a church dressed like that.

You equate stating my opinion with insulting you. Most unfortunate for you.

Since I am not going to change how you think, wear what you lke. It really is as simple as that.

Women also think they have a right to have an abortion.

Do they?

PLEASE PLEASE do not tell me you are equating people wearing shorts to Mass with abortion. That’s a bit over the top, don’t you think?

Wow, what a compelling and thought-provoking response. Rather than respond to my comments or answer my questions, let’s go for some sarcasm! 👍

NO NO

I am trying to make a point about “rights” -

And I will now leave this opinion poll thread to you and the others.

Happy Fourth of July! Don’t eat too many hot dogs!!

Please be assured that I try to give my best to God in all things. The length of my pants is not a hindrance.

During the 1950’s shorts were almost exclusively only worn by children. They were not readily available in adult sizes. So, of course, no one dreamed of walking into a church with shorts. There was a time when pants were not available in women’s sizes. No woman dreamed about wearing them to Mass either. Pants are now acceptable at Mass.

Insults are almost always opinions. Claiming that a statement was an opinion does not preclude insults.

A person may wrongly think that he has any number of rights. What is your point?

I personally don’t care if other people (especially children) wear shorts at Mass as long as they are modest and not too short. For myself though, Id never wear shorts to Mass.

There were quite a few things that were the norm before those awful o’l 60’s, you want to go back to them too? If it helps you to feel more superior and a better servant of the Lord to be part of the Fashion Police, then by all means, show your badge proudly, but be careful of judging what is in another person’s heart.

As long as they are modest, I have no problem with shorts at Mass. Our church has no air conditioning, sometimes shorts are a necessity since we no longer have Sunday morning masses and all masses take place late afternoon or early evening when the temperatures are at their highest.

Back in the day men wore suits and woman layers and there was no A/C. How did they do it? We are wimps I think.
Back in begining of the Church people wore whatever they had. Did Jesus wear a suit? Or did he wear what most people wore based on the weather? Same with the Apostles. Before he spoke I don’t read that Peter switched into his finest robes because some people would be offended he wasn’t dressed as nice as the pharisees.

Fine and good if you don’t think so. I disagree.

But I do take offense to you calling me slovenly? Really?** I said **that bikinis and short shorts are unacceptable. But regular shorts are no different in terms of morality to pants. Both cover the tempting parts of the body, and should prevent gwaking.

Must be part of your generation and your paranoid culture about shorts and women not wearing dresses. We aren’t in Victorian England ol chap.
I live in Phoenix where it has been over 106 all week. I don’t wear shorts to Mass but I have seen people dressed in shorts with dress shirts who did look respectible. I personally won’t dress in shorts at Mass but I don’t believe that people who dress this way are doing so out of disrespect.

Linda
This is all Im saying as well. Except that I wear shorts as well.

A bit off subject… I went to school two years at a university in Daytona Beach… My room mate had a job as a waiter in a very up scale restaurant… The waiters were required to wear tuxedos and the waitress a white ruffled blouse with just a below the knee length black skirt.

If the waitresses and waiters were Catholic, I wonder what they wore to mass??
Point in case.

Go to a funeral Mass or a wedding Mass and you will never see anyone in shorts. People would be offended. It just wouldn’t happen. I find that interesting.
I’ve worn shorts to a wedding. It was like 35C outside and I was sweating buckets.

I think it was an Anglican one though, I can’t really remember.
I am a mid-level manager and interview many people each month.
I could go on for pages about how people dress inappropriately for job interviews,
so it is not just in Church.
Maybe I’m just a bit of a dick, but there is one reason and one reason only I dress up for a job interview: because probability-wise it raises my chances of getting a job (why yes, I am an engineer). Same with being clean shaven. Sorry to burst your bubble, but job interviews are largely like a game where you simply take any advantage you get. We the people getting interviewed simply play to your expectations in order to get hired.

Now that I’ve got the job, it’s business casual (khakis/really ugly plaid dress shirts/running shoes/white socks) and I shave every few weeks. My boss has come out and basically said he wants to hire me next year after I graduate because I do good work. So I guess my appearance means nothing after all.
Those who do ministries should also be appropriately dressed. I am not asking for a business suit type outfit but shorts are not appropriate. Capris on women with nice shoes and shirt are ok as long as they are modest, not revealing, and not tight during the summer months. Men should not go up to read or assist with giving out Communion wearing shorts of any length.
Meh. A few weeks ago both readers were wearing shorts (men), and I and others have been EMHC/alter servers at daily Mass in shorts.

By your definitions, the Chaplain wouldn’t be allowed in the chapel (he’s a big fan of casual wear).
Business casual clothing for anyone over the age 5/6 is appropriate for Mass, and definitely no shorts, tanks, spaghetti straps, strapless, vulgar shirts, sport type outfits like track suits (unless you have no time to change after practice/competition before Mass), no revealing items, nothing tight, minimal/no cleavage (women) and little/no chest hair exposure (men)…
Please tell me you’re joking. Business casual for 5 year olds? Like we’re not even talking about being at the age of reason yet.
