Should A Catholic Returning To The Church After Being Away For Years Enroll In Religious Instruction

I am returning to the Catholic church after being away for years and have been told that there have been some changes in the mass.I also read that even the act of contrition you say in confession has changed.My question is are there any classes for returning Catholics in the NYC area and what would people advise.I am a bit nervous.
 
Most every parish has a program called RCIA, which helps non-Catholics convert to Catholicism and also, in many parishes, doubles as a program that helps fallen-away Catholics return to the faith.

How long have you been gone?
 
I have attended church very rarely in the last ten years and made the decision to return on a regular basis.

I see. Go to the parish of your choice. You probably have lots of options depending on where you are in NYC, but you will most certainly have an option. Then you must speak to a priest there and he will help you.

There have been changes to the Mass. In fact, they came last November. But in all honesty, the Mass is practically the same as it was before, just some of the responses are different. All of the other changes are the priest’s, and you don’t have to worry about those. For example, “And also with you,” is now, “And with your spirit.” The changes amount to a change in translation from the original Latin. The older translation was less accurate, while the new one is more word-for-word and literal. But the Mass is essentially the same, so that shouldn’t pose too much of a problem.
 
🙂 YAY! Welcome back I am currently in the RCIA and we have members of the church sit in on class all the time. I invited my Mom after we argued over a couple of things that I had been taught, that were much different then they way she learned in the fifties. :tiphat:
 
I did and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done.
 
Welcome back! It would be great if you can attend RCIA. Not only to learn about things that have changed, but also as a general refresher – we can forget a lot in 10 years.
 
There are several parish programs designed for returning Catholics. Your parish may or may not have one. Sometimes neighboring parishes go in together for such programs.

You might want to see if such a program is already available to you.
 
If you are in Manhattan, check out St. Paul the Apostle Church. It is run by the Paulist Fathers and one of their major areas is working with returning Catholics. They would love to hear from you and will do everything they can to help you make the transition back.

Thanks you guys for the encouragement and support.I am also going to check out St Francis of Assisi in manhattan.My mom took me to that church as a child,and I have some very fond memories.Maybe I’ll start a revert thread.Would love to find out the reasons why people decide to return to the church.

I hope you will! I know that having someone say check out this or that parish doesn’t mean much, but the Paulists played a part in my return to the Church and I will always be grateful to them.
 
I actually attended college at Fordham University near Lincoin Center,and I attended mass at St Pauls’numerous times.It is a very lovely church,and I am definitely going to consider going back there.Thanks!
