I’m Jewish, my mother is Jewish, and my father is Catholic. My cousin is a rabbi and my aunt was a nun. I’ve looked and looked but I can never seem to find an unbiased answer. Should I convert to Catholicism? From what I’ve read, I like the idea of Jesus and being saved, plus I view Christianity as a continuation of Judaism.

I suppose my real problem is worrying about the Jewish half of my family. I mean, I’ve been told that we’re all sinners and God loves us, but Jews are going to hell anyway unless we accept Christ. So where does that leave half my family, including those who died in the Holocaust?

Although some sects within Christianity hold the view of salvation that you outlined, the Catholic Church does not. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
How are we to understand this affirmation “outside the Church there is no salvation”], often repeated by the Church Fathers? Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the head through the Church which is his body:

“Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the [Second Vatican] Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.”

This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church:

“Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience – those too may achieve eternal salvation” (CCC 846-847).
This means that those non-Christians who serve God to the best of their ability according to the light that they have can achieve salvation. Only if someone knew that Jesus is Messiah and God, that he founded the Catholic Church, that all who know this are required to enter it and remain in it, and deliberately refused to do so, could that person’s salvation be at risk should he not repent before death.

Since you are attracted to Catholicism, I recommend that you study it closely to determine if you can believe and accept its claims to be true. Only if you come to the conclusion that the claims of Jesus and his Church are true, should you convert.
