Our family has received a small inheritance. My husband is convinced that Pope Francis is the “False Prophet” that he will destroy the Church, and Christ’s return is imminent. He doesn’t trust the economy or the banks, and doesn’t wish to invest the money, other than a small amount of gold and silver. The rest he wants to give away. He has never saved for retirement, because of the same reason, that Christ’s return is imminent. He told me we didn’t need to save for our children’s college education because Jesus would return before they even entered college. (Two have graduated, and one is a freshman). He’s been saying this for the 25 years we have been married. Any suggestions?

Spend the money on the best counseling sessions you can find.

Susanna, you need to do what is right for your family. Put the money away, invest, or use it for your kids.

Your husband isn’t rational, but you already know this. Talk to your pastor if you think it will help.

I would suggest to just continue trying to live a good Catholic life, invest your money well. Yes that includes precious metals, which are good investments. Diversify. Continue living your lives, at the same time being prepared for death.

If you have a mortgage, just pay it down. This is sorta like putting it under your mattress.

If you don’t have a mortgage, can you help out your kids who have graduated. Maybe ask them to in turn support your youngest when college comes around.

Remind hubby he’s been saying the same line for 25 yrs, and that Christ’s view of imminent doesn’t always fit with human lifetimes.

No one knows the time…not even the son says scripture. We are charged with continuing the practical matters of living until Jesus returns. This would include providing for retirement and your future should Gods decision not coincide with some men’s decision’s of when Jesus is going to imminently return. Jesus said to Satan we should not put our God to the test. Not planting crops for your future because you believe God will show up tomorrow with a sack full of food is testing the Lord and potentially damning your future.

No - a person should not do that…

Yes, Katherine, I have. My husband only respects priests who agree with him (and there are more than you might think.)

Thank you, setarcos, this is good advice.

Your more than welcome. If God grants that I can be of help then I am truly blest and may God grant your family the foresight and wisdom that is needed.
