Should all Christian Celebrate Easter on the Same Date?

In a way the East and West do celebrate on the same date. From what I understand, the East continues to use the Julian calendar while the west changed to the Gregorian calendar. So while the day is usually not the same in practical terms, it is the same in spiritual terms. This is not the same situation that occurred in pre-Council of Nicaea days.

If we want unity, I don’t think the West should make this an issue. For whatever reason it is the Eastern tradition to use the Julian calendar and that is fine by me.

From personal experience…my best friend is Greek Orthodox and we never saw this as a problem. I feel the disunity is strictly an issue of communion with the Pope.

No, Easter should not be a reason for division but for unity.

Nicea 325 a.d did not complete its work on the liturgical calender.

What they did give us was the formula that works for setting the date of Easter.

Because both Julian and Gregorian calenders are Solar and not lunar, Nicea “directed that Easter was to be celebrated on the Sunday immediately following the full moon that occurs at the vernal equinox”, a spring day when we have 12 hour day and a 12 hour night.
Or Easter would be celebrated the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

This formula does not exclude but includes all of creation celebrates new life in the resurrection.

Both the sun and the earth form a sign in the universe during this time of the vernal equinox in the form of a “Cross” revealed in the heavens revealing the resurrection to all creation.

Nicea was wise in giving us this formula. What time of day this vernal equinox occurs in each ones hemisphere? It does not matter, so that all relate the resurrection with all of creation, in this visible sign from creation in the form of the cross, that encompasses both the Sun symbolizing the “Son” Jesus divinity and the Earth symbolizing “man” in his humanity, The sign of “Contradiction” as Simeon revealed in the Holy Spirit he spoke to the holy family, that will be a sign.

When creation herself gives man and reminds our humanity of this eternal sign of the cross and glorified resurrection of Jesus Christ. No matter which calender one holds too, including the lunar calender.

The Vernal Equinox sign supersedes them all during spring time when life begins a new in all of creation and in the resurection, visible in the new covenant sign of the cross in the sky. The Latin Church still celebrates and calenders her Easter date of the resurrection according to the formula of the vernal Equinox of Nicea.

If Christ be not present daily in our lives, living together as His Body in our world…designating a single day will make no difference…until those who folow Him live daily in the belief He is ALIVE and in our midst…celebrating a single day out of the year makes no difference…each day is Resurrection Day…each First Day is celebration of the Resurrection formally…living as though He really is alive seems more important than proclaiming it one day a year on a specific date.

The Easter day reveals a marvelous amount new life in both creation and new born Christians during this spring of life.

Easter is when the Church celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ with our new converts, newly baptised, confirmed and holy Communion, with the celebration with our local bishops world wide.

The Catholic Church hears the same Gospel message “from the rising of the sun to its setting we offer, My name is great among the nations; And everywhere they bring sacrifice to my name and pure offering. For great is my name among the nations” Malachi 1;11

**The difference from this day from every other day is truly recognized as a reality living, **when the resurrection of Jesus Christ is truly manifested in our new born Christians, welcomed into the Kingdom of God in the body of Christ His Catholic Church, world wide, while creation celebrates this day with the sign of the cross in the sky.

Metamorphoo;9035860]Interesting post, very reminiscent of the Council of Nicea’s decision to formally establish the dating of Easter when it did. Constantine’s letter to the bishops unable to attend gave many of the same arguments.

It should be noted, however, that long before the Nicene Council’s decision, this was a controversy in the Church. It was called the Quartodeciman Controversy. It separated Christians who believed that the appropriate observance of the Lord’s Passion/Death/Resurrection was within the context of the Passover from those who felt a Sunday observance was what mattered and did not want the Jewish Passover to be the determining factor as to the Christian observance.

What should be stated deals with the exercising of the Keys of Kingdom of God that were given to Peter in order to bind and loose on earth and Jesus will bind and loose in heaven what ever Peter binds and looses on earth.

This divine authority of Jesus Christ combined with the see of Peter possessing the Keys of the kingdom of God to bind and loose on earth is something that one can confuse with the opinions of the Fathers that may conflict or agree. Ultimately Jesus has placed the Keys of the Kingdom of God on earth in the hands of Peter and the Catholic Church.

Writings of the Early Church Fathers expressing opinions of the Easter date for or against does not overide the Church council of Nicea when the Keys of Kingdom of heaven were excercised to bind and loose upon the Easter Date.

The opinions of the Early Church Fathers are views to be considered for sure. But the decision and authority is placed on when the Church exercised her divine authority with the Keys that Jesus divinely gave her to exercise here on earth, which gave us the formula to determine the date of Easter in the “vernal equinox”.

Yes, I feel like all Christians should celebrate Easter on the same date because it would be a good symbol of Christian unity. That said, I do not have a problem with the fact that Eastern Rite Catholics and Eastern Orthodox celebrate it on a different date. That doesn’t bother me at all. However, I would prefer that we all celebrated on the same day.
