Hi!
My question is if an unmarried couple, living together should separate in order to be obedient to the church.
Should they separate in order to receive the Blessed Sacraments?
Please give me your help, I’ll really appreciatte it.

Personally, if it’s financially possible, they should. That way they remove themselves from temptation.

If the couple is sexually active they are committing a grave sin. Simply living apart will not bring them back into a state of grace…but it can be helpful by removing much temptation to continue in sin. They need confession and true repentance to be able to receive the Eucharist again.

If they are living together but remaining chaste, they need to speak with a good spiritual advisor about their situation. If there is any possibility (living with family, room mates etc), they should separate (with the exception of if they have a child or children together).

Is this couple planning on marrying in the near future?**

If they’re not having sex but living together for financial reasons, they’re fine.

I wouldn’t even consider finances. What would someone do if he/she was single, and needed to support him/herself? I don’t think finances are ever reasons to move in together–there really is no reason to move in together, unless one is married. This is my opinion–it just causes a near occasion of sin, and tempation.

I also have known friends who have done this, moved in together for financial reasons, and then they married, and I think they wonder if they married for the right reasons. I think it becomes a matter of convenience for many, to get married simply because they have lived together for a while.

The stats don’t lie, also–people who live together before marriage, tend to undergo higher divorce rates, than people who wait until marriage to live together. Not to say people can’t have forever marriages who have lived together, but statistically speaking, the rates of divorce are just higher for those who chose to live together–for whatever the reasons–before marriage.

Just my thoughts.

So, yes, I’d live in a separate residence if I wasn’t married.

Everything you said is 100% correct. I am 37 years old and I do not live with my boyfriend nor will I until I get married. Yes, financially it would make things easier but I couldn’t live with myself if I moved in with him

But wanna know the craziest thing? Folks are amazed and surprised when they find out I don’t live with him. In today’s world I tend to be the abnormal one since I live along. 😛

My priest explains these reasons to be a deterioration of communication. As I recall, this was the jist of his explanation: couples end up saying to themselves “Oh, we’ll talk about it later …” but never getting to that ‘later.’ A couple living separately during an engagement only sees each other after all their other obligations (work, school, family, etc) have finished. The couple is forced to make the most of the leftover time and talk about important issues that will affect their marriage. Living together, my priest says, can halt communication so that the important issues never get talked about. I thought it was really interesting because I’d never thought about it like that.

As to the question: the couple living together should discern that decision carefully with the help of a spiritual advisor. Even living together as brother and sister can give scandal. As many others said (and probably will say), if there is a way for the couple to live separately - they should.

Embee…that is very interesting. Great advice from that priest, I’d say! 🙂

Being abnormal is good in this scenario then, right? 😃 😛 (good for you by the way–it’ll be worth it)
