Should animal testing be outlawed?

We have bigger fish to fry, IMO.

Once the dignity of humans is respected 100% of the time, no exceptions, then we can move on to animals.

And how else would we test the safety of products before being used by humans?

What about plants? If people don’t want animal testing, then testing on plants isn’t ok either, riiiight?

I’m 100% in favor of animal testing! :man_scientist:t2:

If you want to take advantage of modern medicine you need animal testing

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 2416-2418 (emphasis added):
2416 Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory.196 Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals.

2417 God entrusted animals to the stewardship of those whom he created in his own image.197 Hence it is legitimate to use animals for food and clothing. They may be domesticated to help man in his work and leisure. Medical and scientific experimentation on animals is a morally acceptable practice, if it remains within reasonable limits and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.

2418 It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly. It is likewise unworthy to spend money on them that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery. One can love animals; one should not direct to them the affection due only to persons.
In other words, we can do animal testing, as long as we do it within some reasonable moral limits and do not cause needless suffering.

Placing animal life above the dignity of human life is profoundly disordered.

I am trying to avoid products that has been tested on animals (eg cosmetics). I think it can be an unnecessary practice at times and when it is, I don’t support it.

My husband has PKD *polycystic kidney disease, he needs a kidney, is on the transplant list at Mayo Jacksonville. If animal testing helps bring about a faster, safer way to receive a kidney, keep a transplanted kidney lasting longer, or helps his own kidneys somehow, I’m all for it.

Artificial kidneys are a thing, being worked on now. If animal testing helps those become available sooner, go for it.

I am not for suffering of animals at all, but being honest? My husband comes first, as do all who need medical and other help derived from such testing.

Testing of drugs and similar agents on animals before humans will not likely ever be eliminated. As long as it is done in a way to minimize suffering, there is nothing intrinsically evil about it. There are alternatives that can be used to decrease the amount of animal testing as we develop better computer modeling and understand of cell receptors, but it will not be eliminated.

As for cosmetics… I’d just as well see them discontinued, but that isn’t going to happen. It would better to discover a severe adverse effect on a rabbit than on a human.

What about human testing? I am in my 4th clinical trial of an experimental drug - whose short and long-term side effects are not yet known. Should that be allowed?

Consent you say, is the difference?

Where is the consent when we kill and eat those animals? When we catch a fish and filet it?

Someone has to be in charge. Someone at the top of the food chain.

Yet, we are called to be humane and good stewards of God’s creation.

Human testing is a step in approval for a drug. There are first tests on animals, then, people volunteer to test the drug. Some people make a side living being in human drug trials. Yes, they take a big chance.

I believe that how we treat animals is a reflection of how we treat our fellow humans. So if we test on animals and abuse them and treat them badly, are we not surely capable of committing abuse towards others?..

For medical reasons - yes. To try out a new brand of cosmetics - no. There are plenty out there.
