Should Benedict XVI start using a real crosier again?

Exception: The pope. NO POPE, as Bishop of Rome, EVER carried a crozier. If elected to the papacy from another see, he laid the crozier aside.

The Roman Pontiff does not use a pastoral staff because Peter sent his to restore to life a certain disciple who afterwards became bishop of Treves. Hence in the diocese of Treves the Pope carries a crozier but not elsewhere; or else it is a sign of his not having a restricted power denoted by the curve of the staff.

Also, it ought to be mentioned that the Pope is not subject to normal rules regarding vestments and clericals. Pope Benedict breaks about a half dozen rules on clerical garb set down by Pope Paul VI on an almost weekly basis, e.g., the double sleeves he wears every day. As Pope, his personal practises on such matters are not something we should be criticizing.

Also consider the great improvement in vesture overall in Rome since he ascended to the Chair of Peter, and it’s not even been three years yet.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the Pope is technically breaking any of Paul VI’s rules.

Most of Paul VI’s changes in legislative form did not include him or his attire. It affected the attire of the cardinals, the bishops, the monsignori, etc. but usually not his person. He merely stopped wearing whatever item of vesture

Thus the Pope wearing the double sleeves doesn’t break any rules. Unlike if a cardinal decided to do so.
