Should Brian Williams resign?

I have watched NBC news for the last several years. I have always felt, contrary to what Limbaugh and Hannity think, that NBC is the most balanced and fair network news on the air. (We don’t have cable TV.)

I also disagree with those who think that the NBC broadcasters are arrogant. I think this is true of the other networks (ABC, CBS), but not NBC, other than Matt Lauer.

And I also think that NBC is more likely to give a fair presentation of the various “family” issues.

I think there are many talented writers and broadcasters on NBC. I especially enjoy Keith Morrison (on Dateline and occasionally on the morning or evening broadcast). I also find Richard Engel to be as conservative as they get. Mr. Engel is based in the Middle East, and several times, he has stated, his voice bristling with anger, that President Obama is living in a fantasy world when it comes to terrorism and the Middles East. THIS is definitely not “liberal-biased reporting.” I don’t know how Limbaugh, Hannity, and all the rest miss Richard Engel, but I’m guessing it’s because they see what they want to see, and they want to demonize NBC and the other non-FOX networks (possibly because they are part of the FOX line-up and on the payroll? No bias there! :rolleyes:)

Remember, I’ve actually WATCHED NBC news daily, twice a day (morning and evening) for the last several years, so I’m not basing this on just a few views.

I think that Brian Williams should resign. Trust has been lost. For whatever reason, Williams has chosen to embellish his stories and present outright fabrications. The news is not the appropriate venue for this. This kind of “storytelling journalism” is appropriate for entertainment-minded news shows, but not for the Evening News, which is where we want to hear “just the facts, sir or ma’am.”

If he stays, we will always be skeptical about his broadcast and wonder if he’s really telling us the truth. I think that perhaps Williams, at some point, felt that he had to make things up to draw in more viewers and fans. Perhaps the network execs put the pressure on him, or perhaps he made the decision in the privacy of his own soul. It doesn’t matter–he can’t be trusted to tell us the truth, and he should go.

I think that Lester Holt should replace him. Holt is a great anchor and at this point, anyway, has presented news that can believed.

My dream anchor would be Keith Morrison! The ratings would soar! But I doubt that Morrison would ever consider anchoring the evening news because he has a good deal with Dateline telling true-crime stories as only he can tell them!
 
As a “recovering journalist” (albeit strictly local, community newspapers), I think he should be fired. Journalists are supposed to be reporting the truth, not making up facts. That’s Journalism 101 stuff.

At this point, I don’t see what good a resignation would do. His career is shot. NBC needs to cut ties or be dragged down with him.

A shame, though. I’d always liked his anchoring of the Olympics. I wonder if he could continue with that. In my opinion that’s not really news coverage, more entertainment. (I don’t watch television news so I don’t know how he did day in, day out, as an anchor.)

The creeper factor is just too huge for me with that guy.

Keith is creepy for narrating his stories in what I can only describe as and overly melodramatic manner.
He may talk of murder, but his delivery sounds, well, creepy, as if he is romanticising the story.

In my opinion, this is a bit worse than someone making a simple error in judgement, this is a very well known news anchor basically lying about news stories and/or making up certain details…he will NEVER be trusted again because that shows the public he was willing and ready to embellish details to make himself look better…cant recover from something like this, thats just the kind of person Williams is. hes likely been doing things like this for a very long time as well.
 
I didn’t vote. I don’t care whether he resigns or not. He should have been fired, but – not my circus, not my monkeys. It doesn’t matter whether he stays, resigns, or is fired; he’s going to be toxic goods for several years.
 
I’d assume at this point, now that the cats out of the bag, it’s time for him to move on. He has no credibility so either he ‘takes the high road’ and resigns or if NBC wants to pretend it’s a serious media outlet, they’ll have to let him go to save face
 
I had no idea there was a big controversy that erupted surrounding Brian Williams.

Resignation is probably his only option, unless he can somehow provide hard proof that his stories were not embellished/fabricated.

But if it’s true that he was embellishing things for his show, I can see a great future for him in reality television. 😛

Glad to brighten your day 😃 I don’t use the horse metaphor, but I have been known to say “I don’t have a dawg in that fight.” Especially when talking about college football, and double-especially if one of the teams happens to have the bulldog as its mascot. (Funny – no college sports teams chose the Chihuahua, and they’re nastier than any bulldog I’ve ever met.)

Back on topic, I have been enjoying all the poke-fun-at-Brian fallout from this scandal, like the picture showing him standing with Abraham Lincoln and Gen. Grant 😃

I was afraid his “telling tall tales” was establishing street cred toward being a candidate for President (on the uncrowded party’s ticket).

Although … if that were the case … he might be the best one (least worst?) there so far. 😃

Apparently the news as of a few minutes ago is that he’s getting a 6-month suspension without pay.
 
I’m beginning to wonder if Williams is suffering from some kind of mental illness that makes him exaggerate…

…or if that is what NBC is going to try to sell us six months from now.

I’m watching the Today show right now (day off and feeling sick), and it seems that everyone is being so solicitous of Williams, although as if he is “sick” and the six months is a chance for him to “heal.”

So watch for it in six months.

Perhaps they’ll try to link it to meds that he received after his knee replacement.
