I get it now. We have ‘a people of God’ and then there are the professionals.
If you can do something well, and use your talents for the church, make damn well sure you get paid for it. The comment about a Catholic that played for the Lutherans because they paid and the Catholics didn’t just underscores the weakness of such a mentality. That’s just a lousy attitude. The argument abounds that there’s a large workload, that just means one person is taking on too much, if they cant cope with a normal work/life balance. Maybe concentrate on Sunday liturgies.

Maybe greater collaboration could work, but then that would mean letting go and trusting another mere mortal, non-professional, in the sphere of religion. A travesty to be sure.
Come to think of it, I think I’m pretty good at the old praying, maybe I should charge for my services at assisting at mass. I wonder what the going rate is:thumbsup:
I would appreciate some clarification. I’m trying really, really hard to hear what you’re saying, but I think I’m misunderstanding you.
Several people, including myself, have listed the many and varied responsibilities of a Music Director. What I hear you saying is that you don’t believe it.
This is what I hear you saying: either (1) a Music Director
doesn’t really have all those responsibilities or (2) a Music Director should be able to complete those responsibilities in a couple of hours of time off from their “regular” job.
Is that what you’re saying? Am I reading you correctly?
Also, what I hear you saying is that no one should be hired to do Music Direction or any other responsibility in a Catholic Church, but that everyone in the Catholic Church except the priest should be working at a secular full-time job and the work of the parish should be done by all these working people who each volunteer a few hours of their off-work time each week.
Am I reading you correctly?
So what you envision is that the music in the Catholic Church would be handled by about 25 people who have musical ability or talent, each volunteering about 2 hours a week–to accomplish all of the following “jobs” (and any additional jobs that I am forgetting about):
- schedule the cantors and the accompanists
- lead the adult choir
- plan and order the music for the adult choir
- lead the contemporary choir
- plan and order the music for the contemporary choir
- lead the children’s choir
- plan and order the music for hte children’s choir
- practice and play the organ for one Sunday Mass
- practice and play the organ for one Sunday Mass
- practice and play the organ for one Sunday Mass
- practice and play the organ for one Sunday Mass
- practice and play the organ for one Sunday Mass
- practice and play the organ for one Sunday Mass
- practice and play the organ for one Sunday Mass
- practice and play the organ for one Sat. evening Mass
- practice and play the organ for one Sat. evening Mass
etc. (see lists above for additional volunteer activities)
I have listed nine Masses because that’s how many my parish has on weekends. We do not have nine organists/pianists, we have three, so how do you feel about each of us taking three Masses, which would mean about 4-5 hours of “volunteer time?” I probably wouldn’t be able to do so many hours, so I would have to do just two Masses, and one of the other organists would have to do 4 Masses, which would be about 5-6 hours of volunteer time. That’s almost a full work day, and if you add in the practicing, it IS a full work day. So would it be OK to stop offering one of the Masses to avoid having to hire someone to play? Or would it be better to stop having music at one of the Masses?
I have to admit, I kind of like the idea of only doing a few hours of work at my parish a week! agapewolf, sarabande, and other music directors, how do you feel about dividing your responsibilities up between 17-25 people and each of you just doing a few hours of volunteer work? Do you think that would work well?
Am I correctly interpreting what you’re saying, Pilgrim1701? Is this how you envision a parish’s music getting done–many different volunteers each chipping in a few hours?
Thank you for clarifying.
