I’ve heard the controversies of Catholics refusing to sell condoms because of Church teachings on contraceptives. Now here’s a few things I’ve seen.

Before I graduated from high school a year ago, my friend (at my prom, I think) a friend bough a bunch of condoms for fun like blowing them up into balloons and putting it over his head. I know, I know, it’s juvenile.

I’ve also heard that some sex-ed courses (pro and anti-contraceptives) use condoms and tell the schools what they are.

So what do you think? Sell them or just make assumptions?

If anyone is wondering about abortion and whether we should be forced to do it, no one should ever perform an abortion

LOL!

I “heard” a story like that. In high school, some people I know, my, um-friends-put about 300 condums in someone’s locker, so when he opened it up, they went EVERYWHERE.

Yes, it’s juvenile as well-but, they where kids! Give em a break!

They shouldn’t have too sell condums. However, if their boss tells them too, what could they do? Seriously-perhaps someone else could make the sale?

Some danger zones here:

I would have an issue with this situation. A non-Catholic pregnant woman is rushed to the nearest hospital because she is bleeding in the night and upon examination it becomes clear an abortion will save her life. Doing nothing will result in the death of her and the baby. THe woman’s husband arrives and they both say they want the abortion. The situation is worsening by the minute. A call is placed to a protestant OB/GYN to perform the abortion. He’s 25 minutes away. There is not 25 minutes to wait. Clock is ticking. Do nothing and let this woman die? Do the procedure? I don’t think a Catholic doctor should have to perform an abortion. I do think a Catholic hospital is obligated to have someone available immediately who can.just for such an eventuality no matter how rare it may be.

I hope your post doesn’t lead us too far astray from the OP, but I just want to raise a point for clarification.

There is a difference between an abortion and a life-saving medical procedure whereby the death of the unborn child is an unintended side effect. I know it can seem like semantics, but it is a critical distinction.

It was my understanding, that other than in fallopian tube pregnancy (which the child would likely not survive anyway), that there is no known medical condition by which abortion is the necessary vehical for saving a woman’s life. If you know otherwise do tell.

You know, I think it’s important that condemns are available. And I don’t think it advocates premarital sex. And unfortunately, we can’t control if people are going to have sex. But to have dumb 15 year olds end up with STDs, and pregnancies is not necessary… and an unfair “punishment.”

It would be best if everyone that “needs” a condemn was educated in a way that prevented them from “needing” them in the first place. But I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect that.

What do you think they are using them for, if not for sex?

“Unfair punishment”?? Seriously? As in Awwwww, it’s not fair that little Jimmy and Janie have to take responsibility for their actions?

A friend used to work at a drug store when we were at the University. Brought several ***cases ***of expired date condoms back to school with him. We spent the better part of an evening blowing them up. Surprising how many had holes in them or how many of them busted. So much for stopping STDs.

In any case, it was Juvenile fun. 😃

I don’t know about other countries, but in the U.S. it doesn’t have to be a pharmacist to sell condoms. They are sold over the counter, in gas stations, in grocery stores, in restrooms…you can go to Walmart or wherever and get them through the self-check out and ring them up yourself…

It’s not like a prescription. You can buy them in bulk online too…

I don’t know about if you’re Catholic working in Walmart and if you can refuse to check out the person’s condoms as there are no restrictions on them. But I would suggest that if you can’t do the job, you not apply, or ask before you take the job if someone else can be called over to do the actual purchase of the box of condoms. To me there is no difference between someone coming over and scanning the box of condoms on your behalf, or if you do it. Stores are not going to make a customer stand in another line for his/her condoms. Maybe the manager or customer service rep will do it on a check out person’s behalf. But in stores that employ minors, they have to call over an adult to scan the liquor that an adult buys. When I was a kid working in the grocery checkout, I was allowed to have the customer actually scan liquor. Not sure if that’s still allowed, it’s been a while 😉 I suppose if it’s not against company policy, you can have the customer scan it for you.

Good point.

If a person decides for him or herself that it is immoral to check out a customer who’s buying condoms, fine. However, they have a duty to their employer to make that clear when they get hired and let the employer decide whether or not they want to deal with it.

Personally, I don’t see a clerk scanning condoms as being an immoral act. The clerk is neither promoting immoral behavior nor is he or she deciding to stock and sell condoms in the store. Perhaps the customer is a married Protestant. 🤷 Not our business to “cast the first stone” in such a case. Besides, without going into a long theological explanation as to why ABC is considered by Catholics to be immoral, one is not going to be in a position to change the hearts and minds of the condom consuming public.

However, if someone decides for themself that such is immoral, I do respect their choice.

:

Well, perhaps mine are not the best choice of words. However, there are kids out there that are AT LEAST smart enough to use a condom. And in the end that’s about as smart as they are total. I’m perfectly aware of how immoral it is to be having sex in the first place. Out of wedlock, etc. PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES! NO??? And in all reality, they AREN’T using a condom are they? They are getting pregnant, or NOT taking responsibility for the baby they made, or killing their baby, destroying their bodies with disease, and procedures, perhaps even self inflicted.

Little Jimmy and Janie are probably not responsible enough to appropriately CARE for a child. They risk their health, with unprotected sex. Kids spread disease just as easily as adults. AIDS can KILL them. Other STD’s can perm. DESTROY their reproductive organs.

Now, if you can say, that you yourself has never made an error in judgment as a CHILD, then by all means, please press forward and say that all children should have a life time consequence of a poor upbringing, and or poor education, low self esteem and such. In fact, continue on with the possibility that they raise yet another person with a poor upbringing, education and low self esteem. There are reasons there are communities in our country where GREAT GRANDMA is 45. It’s not for their lack of love of God. It’s for so many other reasons that things are wrong in their environment.

Personally, I would prefer to see Little Jimmy and Janie taught everything they can be taught about their bodies. Why they are so amazing that they should protect and save themselves for the love of their life. Unfortunately, that is not seen as necessary.

What if a cheating spouse where to use a condom. Suppose he/she is sleeping with a diseased person. Wouldn’t it be better that said spouse USE a condom than come home and share the wealth? Do you think THAT person will reconsider their actions without a condom? They haven’t since the dawn of time.

The problem is NOT THE CONDOM! It’s the serious lack of morals. It’s the lack of self esteem. It’s the lack of self respect. The condom can not make those problems go away. And not having the condom will not make those problems go away. Look at countries that don’t have easy access, or refuse to use them. AIDS rules many countries. BABIES are born with AIDS because of someone’s IRRESPONSIBLE behavior. Isn’t original sin enough to contend with? Must a baby contend with the sin of their parents? Live it? Die it? With NO CHANCE out.

In the end, it’s a sad world we live in. Our morality needs to be treated like our health. We need to PREVENT immoral behavior. We can always “treat it”… but an ounce of prevention is easily worth it’s weight in gold against a pound of treatment. And as you can see the way our Illness Care (not really healthcare is it?) program is failing us as a country, so is our ImmoralCare… as a country, as a whole.

So, yes, for me. I will work with my children, take them to church. Teach them about their bodies. Why God wants them to remain pure. Pray they have the strength to do so… and if, however, they turn down the wrong path, I want them to be able to get back on the right path. And if they can do so without impregnating a young girl, or acquiring a disease that could ruin their entire living future, then may God protect their bodies when I can’t. They will have to repent, and make good with God. It’s not for me our you to judge them and insist the “take responsibility”. Except when an unwanted pregnancy is the new issue. Then of course, I would encourage only moral paths to take. Stepping up FULLY to the plate, or adoption.

In final response to the OP’s Question: If a pharmacist doesn’t want to be involved with the job as we all know it to be, then he shouldn’t pursue said job. OR, he can start his OWN pharmacy, and sell what he deems morally appropriate. If he can’t cope with doing his job, he should stand up like a man, and quit.

I’ve personally quit working for companies whose ethics were shady. Why shouldn’t said pharmacist. If that’s his belief. And yes, to the other poster that was asking. You CAN buy condoms just about anywhere. Sadly, as a country, we don’t teach our kids how amazing they are, and that they are worth the wait. We just put condoms out like candy in a bowl. They have total access, as they think very little of themselves. It’s not their only problem to say the least.

Uh, why do you think they have expiration dates??

That’s like saying, “I went to Kroger and got a bunch of milk that was past its expiration date and boy was it sour, Kroger milk sucks!”

I think that a problem with this is that condomes do not stop all STDs and even very few if we are being truthful. They only give a VERY false sense of security.

Much better explanation, thank you. 👍 I don’t agree with everything you’ve said here, but I understand what you’re saying better.
Uh, why do you think they have expiration dates??
These were just expired, by less than a month.

Why, do you think everyone checks the dates on their condoms before using them? 😃

Not a VERY false sense… but you’re right nothing is 100% effective except abstinence.

You may be right, I may be exhadrating, but one of the most common STD is herpes, which has no cure. Most people do not understand that a condom will not stop this.
