Well I think this depends where you are coming from since Vatican II there has been a tremendous amount of work done in conjunction with mainline protestants in ecunemical endeavors. However fundamentalist and evangelicals have a far more limited amount of ecunemical activites and tend to compartmentalize themselves away from other churches that don’t think like them in dogma so they might do work with other evangelicals but not with the catholic church.

In answer to your question, "Should Catholics have a better “knowledge” of all things Protestant, I would say “yes”, if only because it helps us understand our friends and neighbors. Growing up, I was under the impression that Protestantism was nothing more than a watered-down and deritualized version of Catholicism. I found out how wrong I was my sophomore year of college when my roommate turned out to be an evangelical who was deeply involved in Campus Crusade for Christ.

I learned all sorts of new things–yep, I know all about Promise Keepers, and Campus Crusade, and Bill Bright, and James Dobson, and the 4 laws, etc., etc., etc. I learned that Protestantism most emphatically is NOT deritualized Catholicism. It is an entirely different means of relating to God, a whole other mindset. I’m grateful for the experience. I know several people now whom I wouldn’t understand at all if I’d never had the chance to learn these things.

Being on the otherside of the fence now,I can look back and see how easy it was to practice Catholicism. The big difference for me now is that I know who I am in Jesus Christ .Everything I did before was out of obligation and commitment. Today I do everything out of obidience and out of Gods love. Jesus said that obidience is better than sacrafice. My life is no longer mine but Christs.I am not the same person that I was before. Its only by His Grace and His Spirit,Praise God. I didnt understand protestants before but I do now.Ive come to one conclusion ,no one denomination has it all right. I thank God for wisdom and understanding which I have attained only by His Word. Im not here to condem any denomination. . I have learned alot from both sides, and I will treasure them in my heart. I just pray that God will lead me and others into His own understanding. God Bless.

Uhm? If you changed the word ‘Catholic’ to ‘Baptistism’ in your first sentence, that’s exactly why I became Catholic!
I just pray that God will lead me and others into His own understanding. God Bless.
Here I would change it to “I just thank God He HAS lead me and others into His understanding. God Bless.”

Your words are so close to mine yet so opposite.

Oh well, you’re a good Christian too and keep up your search. I hope God leads you to “His own understanding” just as He has led me to His truth.
