Not especially a fan of “Hang on sloopy” but “Sweet Home Alabama” you can crank that one up anytime!👍 I also like “Call Me” by Chris Montez and just about any song by Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass.
My wife has Herb Alpert on her iPod. Great stuff.

he’s a fantastic artist. you know, neither the Tijuana Brass nor the TJB had anyone from south of the border in the lineup. nor was Herb himself.

Herb himself made the comment that the " TJB consisted of 4 bagels, 2 pizzas and an American cheese. " There was another group The Baja Marimba Band. The group’s leader, Julius Wechter said there were as many Mexicans in his group as there were in the Tijuana Brass.😃 In the beginning the TJB was only a studio group made up of some anonymous musicians, but when they became popular Herb Alpert had to hire some musicians so he could have a concert stage show.

what, then, are we to make of American standards like Witchcraft and That Old Black Magic?

Today’s music ain’t got the same soul…
Aggh… I’m no music buff but statements like this make me itch, sorry. Can we all please stop saying things like ‘today’s music?’ I mean, we’ve got over hundreds of musicians from across the world. Can’t say I find it charitable to say none of them have any soul. :\

Oh dear, joke completely lost on you? Bob Seger?

“Today’s music ain’t got the same soul! I like that old time rock n’ roll!”

It’s a song. No one was being uncharitable. It was a joke! 😃

Graaah! See? Told you I wasn’t much of a music buff. :crying:

Generalizing modern music kinda has been a pet peeve of mine. God, why am I so serious? >_<

:rotfl: Happens to the best of us! I promise I’m laughing with you! 😃

Completely agree and beauty is completely subjective. We should try to see God in all things and celebrate the great talents he has bestowed on us… in this case musicians.
Beauty is completely objective since it all comes from the same place.

As long as the content isn’t too bad, I don’t see a problem with most secular music. I have pretty eclectic tastes and listen to a very wide variety of music. I like a bit of metal and some of my favorite songs come right to (or possibly cross) the border. I don’t see a problem with me listening to it, but it’s not something I’d let my kids listen to. At the same time, I’ve worked on incorporating some Christian music into my collection and I’m just as likely to put on Matt Maher’s Christ Is Risen as I am Twisted Sister’s Burn In Hell. I find the more spiritual music brings me closer to God, but the Clash, Jane’s Addiction, Van Halen and the Scorpions don’t pull me away from Him. I try to find something beneficial and compelling in everything I listen to and always keep in mind who gave the musicians their gifts.

If not, then oh boy. I have subjected myself, and enjoyed, to many secular music. 😃 I’ll say this: I find most Christian music produced today rather cheesy. I find it embarrassing. It’s well intentioned, but oh so poorly done – this is similar to most movies that are Christian themed; the directing, editing, script and acting forces me to do the stink eye (save for Fireproof which was surprisingly solid).

Where else would beauty come from, in your opinion, other than Beauty Himself?
Try to describe what God looks like. Oh wait, you can’t. Not even the word ‘beauty’ alone is theologically sufficient for the omnipotent. 😉

As the joke goes “There was a child drawing a picture. His mom asked ‘What are you drawing?’ The child said ‘God’. Mom said ‘Nobody knows what God looks like!’ The child answers ‘They will when I’m finished with this picture!’”;)😃

I think todays music is combination of happy sad sex drugs and filled with mixed messages. People should truly listen too what the singer is singing about . It can make big difference what you listen to.

I listen to Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and some beach boys tunes. I even have two Queen songs (they are ‘We will rock you’ and ‘We are the Champions’). I have random songs I have purchased from itunes like Butterfly Kisses, Walking on sunshine and dancing queen. I listen to very **clean **music.
