When I was a little girl growing up, the Free Methodist church had a missionary visiting…Now I have to stop & say that the FMC was & is totally opposed to drinking alcoholic beverages, on any occasion, other than medical.
Anyhow, this man told us about this gentleman who had been part of one of those odd religions that still exist in some parts of the world, where they worship a whole pantheon of “gods”, try to talk to the dead,& sacrifice animals…Real creepy stuff. People–Catholic, Protestant, whatever, were afraid of him. He was a scary, potentially dangerous person.
Anyhow this guy came to the church, he became a Christian believer, & turned away from all that, but he had one big problem: It was a poor country, he had little or no education, and the only job he ever had was running this little tavern. He asked this missionary what he could do. Well, he didn’t know what to tell him, but one evening, he decided to visit the place, just to see how this fellow was doing.
That place, he said, was incredible. People were coming in, & asking for prayer. They were reading their Bibles over a couple of glasses of wine…
The missionary told the guy, if he wanted to join the church, he’d take him any day. “He was doing what they did in the Bible”, he told us. “He was reaching out to people right where they are.”
The point of this is: I don’t have a definitive answer to the question, but I know of at least one man who turned his little bar into a place of peace…
Oh, yeah, and the guys with the “ghosts” & that stuff? They moved right out of the neighborhood…The whole area was changed.
( anyhow::twocents: ).
God bless.
