Is it really right to have two days of rest?

you should work whatever hours are set by the conditions of your job. you should observe the commandment to honor the Lord on His Day, which He established as Sunday when He rose from the dead on that day. You should rest from servile work if your job permits, assist at Mass, spend time in relaxation with your family in whatever form that takes, and spend some time in prayer and meditation with scripture. If you are lucky enough to have Saturday off, do whatever you want with the time as long as it benefits you and your family and is not sinful.

Whether or not someone works on Saturdays is, as Puzzleannie stated, up to the person’s employer. The civil government and unions set the standard 40 hour work week, not the Bible or the Church. Where does the Bible say that you must work at a job for pay 6 days a week? I always took the “day of rest” to mean resting from all menial labor, “menial” being in the eye of the beholder, as that’s also not spelled out specifically in the Bible or catechism. I find housework (including laundry and grocery shopping) and yard work to be menial (meaning I hate it
), so I don’t do any of that on Sunday. I do it on Saturday. (in fact, as a SAHM, I do them everyday, so I really don’t get 2 days of rest. It’d be the same as working at a factory 6 days a week), so I’m not “resting” for 2 days (come to think of it, as a parent of small children, Sundays aren’t all that “restful” either. Sunday mornings are quite busy and stressful, trying to get everyone out of the house and to church on time. Sunday afternoons are better, but I still have to feed the kids and make sure they don’t kill themselves or each other, just like every other day of the week. But since the Good Lord gave me this vocation, I’m assuming he doesn’t count that as disobeying His commandment).Now folks who work outside the home still have to shop and clean the house and do laundry and mow the grass (or shovel the snow), and most do this on Saturdays as well, due, as I recall from my work outside the home days, there’s not a whole lot of time during the week to do it. So they get 2 days of not working for “pay”, but not 2 days of rest.
Oh, and something else just dawned on me: what’s your feeling about taking vacations? Do you think that’s wrong? In that case, if you go out of town, you get 1 or 2 weeks of “rest” (i.e, not having to take care of your house or even cook). Just wondering.

It is my (stay-at-home) wife’s position that two days of rest for the breadwinner are not ok.
It is my position that two days of rest are desirable.
It all kinda goes downhill from there.

That’s the problem w/ us SAHM’s-when do we get our day(s) of rest, if you (the breadwinner) are using them? The only consolation I have is that my dh works o/t quite a bit, so he doesn’t usually get 2 days either. Otherwise, yeah, that’s not fair!

I use my extra day off to to fish, which doesn’t count as a day off because I’m still trying to put food on the table!

Well, the presumtion that all people don’t work Saturday’s is not entirely accurate. Look around you the next time you go out on a Saturday, and you’ll see tons of people working. Personally, I love having a day during the week off because the stores are far less crowded. It’s why I hate shopping on the weekend. Plenty of Christians work on Saturday.
Now the question is how do you define rest? I don’t think you can define rest as any time you are off of work. What about doing spiritual good works? What about maintaining your house? What about running errands? I think most people use at least one day off to do the work involved in the regular running of family and household. And if you don’t have a family, even single people still need time to get stuff done.
There are many types of work we do in this world that are outside of the type of work that we do for a living.
