At a recent Mass there was a table set up in the vestibule with stick-on nametags and markers. The parishioners were encouraged, but not required, to put on a nametag and then engage in a friendly introduction prior to the priest entering for Mass. Is this appropriate?

No. The Mass should not be treated like a social gathering or a business meeting, and the time before Mass should not be filled with chatter when many people are trying to pray and spiritually prepare for Mass. If the parish wants to encourage people to get to know each other, then it should institute a coffee-and-doughnut klatsch in a parish social hall after Mass is over.
