Should Female Alter Servers & EMEC's wear chapel veils?

I suspect I will encounter some resistance to this post, but, I already have my opinion, I am wondering what others will say.

My question is pretty stright forward…

Should Female Alter servers & EMEC’s wear the chapel veil.

Until VII, the use of the veil in the church by women was universal, but has fallen out of favor, even though in the past it has been considered a very pious and modest practice.

In my opinion it should be practiced more…it should, at least, be required of women and girls assisting either as alter servers or EMECs. What do you think?

I respectfully disagree. Although I do think that music ministers and choir members who are in view of the congregation should be robed.

Actually, the use of the veil WAS NOT universal prior to Vatican II. The veil was used by women in Mediteranian countries and countries with a strong Hispanic tradition.

All the other countries, the women wore hats of one type or another.

The veil didn’t come into vogue in America until Jackie Kennedy made it popular.

If you want to make them cover their heads, ala pre-Vatican II, then go all the way and not permit them to be at the altar at all…
 
The use of a head covering for women was a “pious tradition” – nothing mandated it. Therefore, it is a personal choice. So, to the question “should they…” – it’s up to them to decide if they want to use this practice or not.

My personal opinion is yes, headcovering of some sort should be mandatory for women in Church. Why not follow the Word of God as revealed in 1Cor, 11: 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head not covered, disgraceth her head:
10 Therefore ought the woman to have a covering over her head, because of the angels.

I am so very tired of people twisting the scriptures. And I’m just not a lace person, and all these guys seem bent on sticking lace on women’s heads!!!

My neighbor says that she is tired of people who talk about religion but know very little about Scripture.
 
Never mind about female alter servers and having EMHC’s at all, veils are indeed a Hispanic/Mediteranian tradition. Not one madated by the Church, but one mandated by local custom. Since I am neither Hispanic nor Mediteranian, I see no need to wear one.
 
First and foremost,I think we should most importantly get them to dress modestly. Then if that happens you can gripe about the chapel veils.
 
Ok, Patchunky, let me correct my poor choice of words…I mean…of course…when I speak of veils…head coverings, be that a hat, veil, scarf…etc.

Deacon Ed…you say that “Nothing mandated it”, that is actually incorrect, it WAS in the 1917 Code of Canon Law (Canon 1262.2) which stated that women must cover their heads "especially when they approach the holy table, was never repudiated., so it was indeed mandated for women to cover in the presance of the lord.

Now I understand that the document* Inter Insigniores* by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in 1976, said that the 1917 Code of Canon Law requiring women to wear veils on their heads was a custom, and that such ordinances “concern scarcely more than disciplinary practices of minor importance.” and the obligation “no longer has a normative value.” But even now, women are required to wear a veil when meeting the pope…so why not when meeting the LORD?

I am not suggesting, here, that EVERY woman should wear a head covering {all though I think it would be prudent} only those ladies and girls who are serving at or near the alter.

MaryAgnes, about the choirs being robed? I agree, better yet, let’s stop using those CHOIR LOFTS for storage and use them for Choirs!

I don’t think they should be *forced *to wear a veil…perhaps encouraged, but not forced. If we’re going to use Scripture like that, why stop there? Why not prohibit them from speaking in church, like Paul also suggests?

any parish where the women are wearing veils or headcoverings is likely to be of a traditional or even Latin Mass orientation, so why would they allow female servers or other liturgical ministers in any case?

A mantilla or hat would be nice, but not something covering the face. i would not want a woman wearing a burka in a Catholic Church. :bigyikes:
