Should females be excluded from being altar servers?

From the document by the Congragation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Redemptionis Sacramentum (emphasis added):

[47.] It is altogether laudable to maintain the noble custom by which boys or youths, customarily termed servers, provide service of the altar after the manner of acolytes, and receive catechesis regarding their function in accordance with their power of comprehension.[119] Nor should it be forgotten that a great number of sacred ministers over the course of the centuries have come from among boys such as these.[120] Associations for them, including also the participation and assistance of their parents, should be established or promoted, and in such a way greater pastoral care will be provided for the ministers. Whenever such associations are international in nature, it pertains to the competence of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments to establish them or to approve and revise their statutes.[121] Girls or women may also be admitted to this service of the altar, at the discretion of the diocesan Bishop and in observance of the established norms.[122]

Do you think the Church would allow a practice in the liturgy that is “fundamentally wrong”?

If I recall, the last one was closed by the moderator of that section with a request to use the search engine option on CAF to see the dozens of previous threads. 😉

Only on CAF can we beat that proverbial horse to death, then resurrect him and beat him again!

It was a rhetorical comment :rolleyes:- based on the history of women-bashing the forum has, until a mod has enough of it and closes the thread. Any thread on altar servers, modesty, or women in general will have the usual suspects out in droves posting things that hopefully don’t drive prospective Catholics and struggling Catholics away…

This question was posed to Father Mitch on Open Line a few months ago. It is up to the discretion of each Bishop. I am a younger Catholic so I didn’t really think too much of seeing girl altar servers because there were there my whole life along with boys. I personally don’t think it is a big deal but I can see how people could take issue with it or it could confuse people.

Heehee, I’m feeling mischievous now. I wonder if I said something like “Women’s elbows should be well-covered because they arouse an occasion to sin” how long it would take to before it was dragged out of context and sparked some real hooliganry.

It would show once again that the obsession with modesty is in itself quite immodest.
