To break down the barrier between church and state would be a grievous error.
It is true that many of our laws coincide with laws in the Bible, Torah, and Koran - but these laws are something that society agrees are necessary for peaceful coexistence. If we make laws simply on the basis of ‘God says so’, we risk the chance that a religion other than our own will gain power.
Just as some Christians may view homosexuality as a sin, what people do in the privacy of their own homes does not infringe on the liberty of others. If homosexual acts are illegal, what is to stop making bacon illegal, or hijabs mandatory for women in public? Both Jews and Muslims believe pork and shellfish to be ‘unclean’, but does eating them infringe on the liberty of others? Of course not. Some people claim that homosexuality - even talking about it, may influence their children. You have the right to teach your children what you believe to be right and wrong, but you do not have the right to impose your morals on everyone else. This is the type of thinking that leads toward stoning women that allow an ankle to be exposed from under their burka.
The United States was founded on freedom of speech and religion - every religion. Be thankful you have the right to attend the church of your choice, and show it through keeping church and state separate.
