Should homosexuality be discussed in the classrom?

Yes, because like it or not - it exists.
It depends on which classroom you are talking about. If, in the classroom of a parochial school, under the supervision of a priest, then yes-by all means.
If in a public school, subject to the whims and predjudice of an ordinary public school teacher then under no circumstances. The reason being rampant amoral secularism. Even if ones child is excused from such a class, that child is then subjected to opressive peer pressure and amoral, uncatholic misinformation by its classmates.
Bear in mind that considering the state of public education in the USA and existing court decisions, there is no way that one can have an objectively moral discussion or teaching of sexuality of any kind in public schools-on any level. All we can expect there is apologetic propaganda. The only moral teaching on the subject that we can hope for is in private and parochial schools.

The government can, of course, force anything it wants onto public schoolchildren, and will under this administration, no matter what anybody thinks about it. A government that forces Catholic institutions to provide chemical abortion coverage for its employees will certainly not recoil from teaching about homosexuality. But is there really any reason why private schools should do that any more than they should teach about fetishism, rape/murder, sadism, masochism, necrophilia, bestiality or any other sexual perversion?

It isn’t as if young people don’t pick up on the existence of homosexuality anyway. And, indeed, parents often do tell children about it because children ask about it. What formally teaching school children about homosexuality is really all about is teaching about it in a particular manner…a favorable and approving manner.

And I do not approve of teaching about any sexual perversion to children in a favorable manner, whether in private or public schools, recognizing though, as I do, that governments are not particularly responsive to what parents want for children.

Oops! “Classrom” in the subject line should have been “classroom.”

Are you suggesting that children shouldn’t be taught about rape and murder?

One more roll of bubblewrap here please! Our kids are gonna be raised like they’re living in Sesame Street. No, safer than Sesame Street. Let’s just keep them locked up and the TV off. Murder doesn’t exist, and neither does rape.

Uh what kind of elementary/high school did you go to? We never had a discussion in particular about rape or murder. Our teacher did not set aside a class and talk about what rape is and how it worked, and then proceed to talk about how some people think its wrong and others don’t. The same applies for murder as well. In history class if someone had been murdered it would have been mentioned but we didn’t have a discussion about what murder was and whether it was ok or not.

I’d also point out as well though that when we talked about Margret Sanger and just what a great feminist leader she was we definitely didn’t mention anything about her eugenics agenda and relationship with Nazi Germany… If we are going to introduce kids to what homosexuality is, why not the eugenics movement?

I think homosexuality is worth mentioning in a sex-education class (if we have to have those in public schools), but in all reality every kid knows what it is and you don’t have to go to school to learn about it.

When I was in school in the 80s, plenty of groups of kids with differences were being bullied and picked on. In some high schools, anyone who wasn’t a jock was subject to torment and ridicule to varying degrees. I don’t remember any school thinking they should discuss all the various non-jock “lifestyles”. That wasn’t the important thing. The important thing was consistent discipline for the tormentors, which was a clear message to would-be tormentors to change their outlook and change their behavior.

Look, we need to keep all kids safe and secure in school. But, think about this. If I’m a self-absorbed bully, who hangs around other like-minded self-absorbed bullies, do you think a “class on homosexuality” is going to deter me and my friends from bullying? What exactly are we going to learn in homosexuality class that is going to make me say “oh, wow, I didn’t know…I should stop bullying them”?

Most kids in school do NOT bully gay kids. Most kids accept them as they are, and couldn’t care less about their sexual orientation. The few who will torment them will torment them with or without academia on their orientation. What they need is a stiff kick in the a## when they decide to do it.

I just think all this “lets teach homosexuality in school” stuff is part of an overarching agenda to push general acceptance of homosexuality as a norm in society.

And exactly at what age would you recommend we teach children about murder and rape? I didn’t have a lesson on any of those things, and I have no bubble wrap on me. Not all things need to be taught to children simply because those things “exist”. They’ll figure out most of those things as they grow into adulthood.

Actually, I did have lessons on what rape was, common statistics, good ways to reduce your chances of it happening to you and what to do if you are raped. Also discussed murder, what we had heard in the media about it, how common it really was - all of this was tied in with lessons about crime and law.

Like it or not, Sanger was a key figure in the feminist movement. So that’s the light in which she will be discussed in. Some may mention her eugenics past, but heck, in that era, who wasn’t into eugenics? Must we go through the full history of everyone we ever learn anything about?

That sounds like “everyone knows what sex is and how it works, no need to teach them about it.” I think school is the best place for young adults/children to be able to talk about it with their peers and teachers.

It’s bubblewrap not to teach children in schools about the sexual perversion of murder/rape? I think you know I was not talking about preventing children from knowing what murder is, or even what rape is. As one poster noted, you can’t even read history at the most elementary level without knowing what murder is, and you can’t read a whole lot of more advanced literature not to know what rape is. You can’t get out of first grade religion without knowing what murder is, and you can’t get terribly far in Catholic schools without knowing what rape is. But that’s not the same thing as delving into the perversion of murder/rape. And certainly it is not presenting it in a favorable light, which is exactly what public school “teaching” about homosexuality is.

Here is an appalling instance (in California of course) of the State taking taking away from the churches the moral instruction of the young.

Sodomy will now be treated as an acceptable lifestyle, even if the parents of these children have taught their children otherwise.

The inmates are running the asylum … and nobody seems to care.

And this is the kind of callous attitude that causes active homosexuals to just shut out religious people.

I think you will find the Caritas in veritate encyclical spiritually nourishing.

And this is the kind of callous attitude that causes active homosexuals to just shut out religious people.

No, the state of California is exercising a forced acceptance of immorality on the young. And this is the kind of attitude that causes religious people to condemn sodomites.

Paul got it right in Romans 1. Of course, some Catholics just never get it right … they are so completely seduced by moral relativism.

I’m not referring to the article, I agree that it is a terrible idea, I was in fact referring to the two lines below it.

I completely agree, which is why I homeschooled my kids
