I have noticed a homosexual male couple in the congregation and one of them takes communion, should I tell the priest? Is he allowed to take communion?

Like anyone else, if he is properly disposed he may receive communion. It would be hard to determine that status for someone else.

None of your business. How do you know they’re a homosexual couple?

And even if they are a homosexual couple, how do you know that their relationship doesn’t involve sexual activity, in which case it’s very possible that neither of them is in mortal sin?

We cannot judge the hearts of men. We can judge actions. I certainly agree that persons who are unrepentant of sexual acts with members of their own biological sex are guilty of grave sins. Hence, they are not properly disposed to receive Holy Communion.

However, everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, should strive to be in a state of grace and receive Holy Communion.

If a person is sexually active in a homosexual relationship, that person is committing a sin of sacrilege by receiving. However, as the above posters have said, it isn’t your business to deal with it. You could mention your concern to your pastor, but by all means let HIM deal with it, not you.

They may have acted so as to give you scandal without having committed a mortal sin. In any case, there is a reason the Church has not charged the faithful with tattling on each other. It is better for your spiritual well-being if you do not concern yourself who are not under your spiritual care or authority.

In those cases where you are aware not just of the implication of serious sin but also of what seems to you to be open admission or commission of serious sin, then speak to the person directly, express the hope that it is you who have committed rash judgment against an innocent person and ask forgiveness in advance, if that is the case, and then encourage him to repent in case you have not. Then you will have done your duty towards him.

This is not for you to determine. You should not do anything other than work on redirecting your focus during Mass.

Edited to remove quote as I quoted the wrong person in error.

I wouldn’t do anything.

the best you could do is write an anonymous suggestion to the priest saying maybe to include how one under grave sin should not receive communion and should go to confession first to be in a state of Grace - because in all reality a lot of Catholic’s dont even know that!

Well, yes, the priest is allowed to take communion, if he is properly disposed. Yes I know the question doesn’t refer to the priest. But as many have said, no one knows the state of another’s heart. And it’s not anyone else’s business.

I understand that it may be scandalizing to you. Personally, I am scandalized by those who publicly support things contrary to Church teaching—abortion, birth control, etc.—receiving the Eucharist. But then, I don’t know the state of their hearts. It’s a dreadful thing to partake of the Body and Blood of Christ unworthily.

It is none of your business. Deal with working on your own weakness and brokenness, and not on that of others. Being gay is not a sin…however acting on that attraction IS a sin. But gossiping and judging are also sins… have you been to confession lately to confess these sins of yours? I might “tell the priest” …

Absolutely - but I suggest you check that other people aren’t in a state of mortal sin too. Have everyone sign a declaration at the door before they enter Church each week stating that they are not using birth control, or masturbating, or fornicating. 'cos you know I bet there’s a ton of other sinners in Church every Sunday just waiting to be outed.👍

You know guys, what I’m seeing here is an innocent question by a person who is concerned about whether or not a sacrilege is occurring, and a whole bunch of other people who immediately pounce upon that person saying that they are absolutely, terribly, sinfully wrong to be asking such a question.

That is neither the correct nor the charitable answer to the question.

The original question in the title is “Should homosexuals receive communion,” and that is the question we are answering. Yes, we should definitely caution against becoming the “sinner nazi,” but I also think that the snarky and sarcastic comments made by people on this thread are uncalled for, useless, and uncharitable. Answer the OP’s question clearly, that even though it is wrong for any person with a mortal sin on their soul to receive communion, it is none of their business to be meddling on other people’s affairs.

It looks as if the OP is an honest Catholic who is not solidly sure in the teachings of the Church, and is looking for assurance. By no means is it necessary to start pointing at the OP with comments such as “when was the last time you went to confession.”

Just answer the question and move on.

You don’t know if that homosexual has gone to confession. If he has, he can certainly receive the Eucharist.

We are all sinners. There are plenty, I’m sure, individuals having premarital hetero sex receiving communion that you may not consider running up to a priest about.

The question as posed is not easy.

I think it is very important not to assume homosexual = practising homosexual

Surely a person of homosexual disposition, who has examined their conscience and confessed any sin, is welcome to receive Communion.

You post a question and you will get a range of opinions.

I disagree with your opinion on this thread, but I haven’t said you do not have a right to make it.

Sometimes a little irony helps people think for themselves, and then they realize how the question sounds to others.

Of course the OP should not interfere, in the same way that he should not involve him or herself in the marriage, sex or relationship lives of others in the congregation. Not his remit. Not his business. And even if it was, even if it was, he has no idea whether this purportedly gay person is in a state of mortal sin, in the same way as he does not know if the couple behind him with only two kids use birth control, or have suffered through the heartbreak of multiple miscarriages.

And all this begs another question? How do you know someone is gay? They look gay? They speak gay? They dress gay? Now we are slipping into the kind of behaviour which is definitely not Christian, and is sinfully hateful, prurient, judgmental and gossipy.

So I think my previous post was fine, thank you very much, and got the point across just as well as this one, with less typing.👍

  1. If one is in a state of grace then one should receive communion, if not one is not in a state of grace then one should not receive common. The have to follow the same rules as anyone else, no more, no less.
  2. How do you know they are a homosexual couple as opposed to close friends?
  3. Assuming they are a “homosexual couple” how do you know they are sexually involved?
  4. Assuming they are a “homosexual couple” and are sexually involved to some degree how do you know that the one who received communion did not make a valid confession since the last time he committed a mortal sin?

I wasn’t necessarily aiming my post at yours, it just happened to come next after yours.

I was responding to the general tone of almost all the posters in the thread, and noting how it seems a little too much, considering the situation. Almost no one gave the OP the benefit of the doubt, but rather assumed the worst.

I’m none to judge the OP’s personal intention, I do not know him/her. But I do see that the wide response was rather harsh.

Maybe peoples’ answers are harsh because they are shocked or upset by the question.
We are all sinful as individuals and as a people. That’s why we needed (and still need) Christ, and why we continue to need the Church.

We have to love each other as we are - even though we are all broken by sin. Christ NEVER asked us to judge another or to turn them into the priest.

I was calling for people to be a little more charitable to the OP, and you have just, essentially, reiterated what I was saying.

People instantly chose to judge the OP.

I’m not quite sure who you are disagreeing with.

Maybe I am misunderstanding you.🤷
