Should I abstain from Communion?

I’m going to try to make it to confession tomorrow before midnight mass, but I’m slightly concerned about being able to be seen for confession, cuz I know where I go there is always a huge line. I’ve already done an examination of conscience, and done what I can to repent of my sin, but in the event I am unable to go to confession, should I abstain?

I remember hearing on Catholic Answers once, that once the examination of conscience has been made and it is sincere, that the sin is already forgiven, and that one can receive Communion if they go to confession ASAP.

If you have any sins on your conscience that you think are mortal, you can be forgiven through an act of perfect contrition, but I’ve always heard that we should still ordinarily abstain from receiving the Eucharist. It might be in part because we can never know if we really had perfect contrition, so we err on the side of caution if we aren’t sure that we will be receiving Communion in a state of grace.

Anyone else?

Here, it looks like this is addressed in Canon Law:

Can. 916 A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass or receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession unless there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess; in this case the person is to remember the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition which includes the resolution of confessing as soon as possible.

So those are the conditions. If you can, try to get there as early as possible, or maybe call ahead and ask for an appointment right before the regular confession time?

As a side note, the long lines at the confessional are comforting to hear about!

Thx! I’m going to get there nice and early.

Amen for reconciliation. The had two priests doing double duty and started early today. There was already a good line and I got there almost half hour early. Merry Christmas everyone, and Happy Birthday Jesus 👍

You have to go to confession before communion if you have moral sins on your soul.

You can offer an absolute confession if you are in danger of immediate death and cannot make it to a priest. If you get out of the situation alive you are to go immediately go to a priest and confess.

Here is more information from Fr. Vincent Serpa:
