Just Another Thou made some excellent, practical, and easy-to-put-into-action suggestions. I particularly second the one about pet sitting or dog walking. All you need to do is post something on your local grocery store’s bulletin board, or on those of your church and other local churches; costs nothing! People seem always to be looking for someone to take care of a pet while away, and you can charge a decent hourly fee for it.

Your background seems to indicate you could also advertise as a reading tutor. That could bring in significant $$$.

You seem to possess the education, experience and skills necessary to keep your head above water. I will keep you and your situation in my prayers; I feel that you have the answers at your fingertips, quite literally. (And do pursue all Catholic Charities related avenues in the meantime…) God Bless.

Just a word in response to the reading tutor suggestion, in case otthers looking at this thread are interested. Most tutors are not paid, at least in So. Cal, and perhaps throughout California. I know about this because I was a literacy provider in a library and trained tutors. There is a network of libraries here in California, that provide literacy and free tutoring services, funded under a state grant program since 1988. Services are available free for low literacy adults and for families with children under five years of age who caught in the cycle of illiteracy. Additionally, many libraries have free homework centers, either through the California Library Literacy Program or through another program, that provide tutors for school age children. Libraries often use college students for these volunteer tutor positions. I do keep my eyes out for private companies who pay for tutors, however I find these to be very limited and often the staff is sufficient for their needs. I also have applied at other literacy organizations. One thing that people need to know who are reading this is, unless you have had a teaching creditional and some years of experience teaching, you will not qualify for a job at someplace like Sylvan Learning Centers. I want to make the point that for most people looking into becoming a tutor does not mean any $$$ - or at least it is just a little $$$ - and in some places it is good to know Spanish as well as English. Secondly, for anyone who feels their reading, writing, math, or computer skills are holding them back in life (at least in California), there is most likely help for you at your local library - for free, from a volunteer who is trained under a literacy specialist.

Things may be looking up. I received a phone call today for a second interview at the county office where I interviewed about three or four weeks ago. Seems one of the people they hired (two positions were open) did not pass the background, so they are calling some of us back for a second interview. Thanks for the prayers. Here’s hoping this is it!

Meanwhile, I do need to use what internet connection I can grab to search and apply for jobs. So I probably won’t be returning to this thread and requesting no more alerts.
