My brother plans to marry someday to a non-Christian, and they want to be married by a Justice of the Peace. I understand that with the proper dispensations this would be permissable (dispensation of cult and form). However, here’s my problem and thus my question: my brother has basically “fallen away” from Catholicism…not by any “formal act” (as in he hasn’t joined another church), but is now “unchurched”. I’m pretty confident that he won’t get the proper dispensations (probably doesn’t even know what they are). When the time comes and I’m invited to the wedding, I’ll be at a loss as to what I should do. It seems to me that I would be attending an invalid marriage. Any help you can provide is much appreciated.
