I’m in the RCIA class at my local parish, just got done with Rite of Acceptance a few weeks ago.

My family is southern baptist, does not see eye-to-eye at all with the church (Marian devotion and purgatory gets them really worked up), but otherwise, we get along great.

My question is concerning going to church on Christmas Eve with them. This in no way replaces going to Mass (will be doing that at 10 p.m. that night and 10 a.m. on Christmas Day). I’m not really wanting to go to the Baptist church, but part of me wonders if I should, as a charitable duty, so that my family doesn’t associate Mass and Catholicism with me “neglecting” them and separating myself from family time with the Lord.

Would it be a good thing to go, as a goodwill type of gesture, even going as far as to make a deal with them (if I go to church with you, will someone go to church with me?). Or am I better off not going? Any help is much appreciated, and merry Christmas!

Hi,

Some would disagree with me, bu I think you need to make a break with your Baptist past. Catholicism is still new to you and you ought to delve into it, free of anything else. Also, your family needs to get used to your not being a Baptist.

I suggest that you socialize with your family, but not attend church with them.
