A certain game has a map named Armaggedon.
Armaggedon is a word written in The Sacred Scriptures.
Does having a map named Armaggedon disrespect The Sacred Scriptures?
 
Um, should we all avoid this forum now, because you typed the word Armaggedon?

I don’t mean to be flippant, but you should only worry about things that take the Lord’s name in vain. Armaggedon not being the Lord’s name, you have IMHO nothing to worry about.

Although I’d be wary of games that mention the devil too much, but for different reasons.
 
Another game I have takes a quote from The Sacred Scriptures.

But The Verse they quoted, I feel, makes Christianity look bad.

It is

“Let us do evil so that good may come?”

Those who read this may think that Christianity supports using evil for good intentions.

Should I avoid these games? and the companies that make them?
 
Hopefully you can very soon contact a good priest experienced in scruples/OCD or whatever it is that plagues you, and do exactly what he advises as ways to handle these numerous issues you have concerns about.

Sunday morning, a young man approached me and asked if what he was wearing was appropriate for Mass. IMO, of course it was appropriate. But I had to ask him, WHY did he think it may not be appropriate. :confused:

Then, if you don’t think it’s appropriate, why would you WANT to wear it, whether others had objection or not.

You are playing these games, and you feel guilt about playing them. Why? If you feel guilty, why do you keep playing them? If the games, in YOUR opinion, make Christianity look bad, what is it about the games that make them so attractive that you would do something that you think is so bad? :rolleyes:

Then, there is the whole, ‘they use scripture’ thing. Years ago, mostly in jest, but hey, it’s pretty accurate: if it isn’t in the Bible, written by Shakespeare, in a poem by Helen Steiner Rice or a Beatle’s lyric, it doesn’t exist - Ok, so it’s just a rarity. Still, the words of the Bible exist in a lot of places.

You may be less uncomfortable with references to the Bible if you were more familiar with the Bible. And please, do not just grab the Bible and try to read it as if it was some James Patterson novel. It is not. It would serve you (and the rest of the world) well if you could get a trained person to help you to understand what you are reading.😉

The Bible, it all of it’s beauty, is not a regular book. For starters, it is a book of books. Each book has it’s own style of writing. They were written over hundreds of years, so the culture is different at different times. Some things are literal, and some things are more literal than others. Some are purely figurative. It’s ALL true, though.

The Books of the Bible were recorded and preserved and passed down so that we can all benefit and learn from them. Not so that we will be afraid of them. This is NOT a Steven Spielberg movie where touching the Bible is to make us burst into flames! 👍

not any more than naming a city in PA Bethlehem or describing a candy as “heavenly”. If they game were based on a plot that somehow denigrates sacred scripture, or blasphemes, that would be another story, but would not have to do with the name, which simply refers to the geographic name of the symbolic site of the final battle described in Revelation.

IIRC, Armageddon in scripture refers to a place or area. Thus, a map would seem to be the most correct usage.

Also, please note that many quotes from scripture have become idioms in English. Shall we stop using English because of that?
 
No, that’s not a sin. Just because someone uses words from the bible doesn’t mean they are making Christianity look bad.
 
But they seem to change the meaning of The Quote From The Sacred Scriptures

I like this game.

I’m just looking for an answer to see if I should continue play this game.

If a game as a mission labeled “Gigantic” God is this offensive?

I think you answered your second question.

If you like the game, there should be no problem playing it (so long as it doesn’t interfere with your responsibilities). My guess is that you aren’t likely to worship the game (or something in it). Right?

I think that’s already been answered. A game is not objectively immoral by merely misquoting Scripture. Many works of fiction misapply scripture, science, history or other facts in order for their plot lines to work. This requires suspension of disbelief on the part of the person enjoying the work of fiction in order to enjoy it.

The only potential problem I can think of is scandal. If there is someone who would be scandalized by the thought of such a game because they are weak, it is better to not play it in their presence. An example might be playing a war game in the presence of a pacifist when it could cause the pacifist to be scandalized. War games are not objectively immoral, however.

There is also the issue of scrupulosity, which you brought up. You would do well to address that with your pastor to get that under control so you can get back to enjoying your life.

Your question has actually been answered several times. I even answered it myself. There is NO REASON for you to NOT play this game.

However, if you are uncomfortable, there is nothing to compel you to play that game. That is: if you don’t want to play the game you don’t have to.

IT IS A GAME. Not a way of life. Nothing mandated. Nothing you are required to do. Just like there is nothing to say that you can’t do it. 😛

You don’t want to play the game, you don’t have to. Do you need someone else to say that it’s ok for you to not do what you don’t want to do, or to blame for when you do something you think that you shouldn’t? 🤷

What else do you do other than to play these games that you come to CAF and ask ‘should I be playing this’ and then getting upset with the answers that you are given? Perhaps a different hobby (reading, writing poetry, topography) would serve you well for a while. At least until you can get over whatever it is about these games and the answers you are given about them.

I do hope this helped. I wasn’t trying to be mean or mean spirited. But you asked and it was answered by several people. You will have to excuse me now as I need to dismiss myself from this thread. You see, there is NOTHING to MAKE me continue this conversation. Now that it is not enjoyable, I do better to leave it alone. 🙂 👍
