For about a year and a half, I’ve been going to the gym and I’ve loved it. I liked the environment and the equipment, and even the music got me pumped up. At one point though, I heard a priest give a homily about purity and I felt something stir inside me. I thought about some of the music they played at the gym and how some of the songs made impure references. I want to keep going to the gym because I love working workout with weights and other equipment, but I also don’t want to put myself in a situation in which I could possibly be listening to impure music. How should I go about this?

What about wearing headphones and listening to your own music? If the lyrics are particularly offensive towards women, you might consider making a complaint to the management, too.

We don’t live in a bubble - Some of your options are to tolerate it, ignore it, listen to something else on headphones, ask them nicely if they’d play something else, or work out elsewhere.

If you find some of the music to be offensive I agree with the others who suggested headphones, but I also feel that you should kindly state your objection to the manager. If your gym is like many that I have been in there will be young children who will walk through going to the childcare room and they should not be subjected to anything inappropriate. May I suggest that you explore podcasts. I walk 30 minutes each day and listen to them to pass the time. There are several hosted by Catholic priests or couples that are great.

One does have to wonder, however, how impure the music is.

In other words, if it’s Top-40, which some people do consider to be impure, the management will probably ignore you (at best).

You won’t find a gym that isn’t playing contemporary music over the sound system, unless you workout at home.

Maybe you could consider the struggle against impurity as being the spiritual aspect of your workout? 🙂

This kind of impurity is in the ear of the beholder… I live silence and am very very rarely anywhere where there is this kind of din. ie “music” and occasionally I am shocked by the lyrics,

Earphones are the answer… Why let any contamination in? It is like wearing a mask in polluted air,

“Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.”

usccb.org/bible/mark/7

Although I certainly agree that there are lots of lyrics that definitely cross the line. 😦
