Should I break out the Highlighter & Pen?!

I recently bought a gorgeous, leather bound RSV-CE 2nd Ed. from Ignatius.

I have a couple questions of the forumites…

First, is this an improvement over my (apparently 1st Edition?) Oxford RSV-CE and, for those of you who own the Ignatius text above, how do the thick off-white colored pages take to highlighters and pens? I can hardly bring myself to mark up such a beautiful bible, but it’s meant to be used, right?

For me, it would be impossible to mark in such a beautiful bible. What I do is have One for devotional reading (say like your new one) and One for study where it would not bother me to mark and jot down notes.
 
I save my highlighter for my paperback NAB study edition, and now my old PB RSV-CE, the new leather covered one is for devotional use only and not for study, because that is what I got it for, and because I cannot bear to mark up such a beautiful book. I do keep a couple of those sticky postit marker tabs in the back if I need to mark a passage temporarily, but will remove them very very carefully when finished.

I had it ingrained in me from as far back as I can remember that you NEVER mark on books. Add to that the importance that is placed on a Bible, and I just can’t get me to enjoy highlighting - I do have a little pocket KJV that I use and I highlight in that one, but it’s so little, and so paper… and it’s KJV (mean snicker)

What I use now when I study are Tape flags. They are like Post-it notes, but they are slender, most of it is clear, and they come in colors.

It’s not as defined as a highlighter pen - I can usually mark the start of a paragraph, or a word, but seldom a complete thought.

Just a thought.

(I think it’s a beautiful Bible, too, and I wouldn’t want it marked, just for the artistic sake of it. I would suggest getting a second Bible for studying)
 
This is all good advice. I think I’ll preserve the leather clad one for devotional reading. Thanks so much.

I have the same Bible but in the soft cover, and I have added tabs as well - it is my study Bible, and so I do mark it up all over the place. 😃 There are special highlighters for Bibles too - they don’t soak through I guess. I use a Sharpie brand neon yellow in mine, and it doesn’t soak through that badly on the heavy paper - only if I go over something twice or linger too long when dragging the marker along.

I would save the leather bound one for carrying to Mass or Adoration, and for study I’d get the same one in soft cover.

Just a thought…if you want to put notes in that beautiful bible try post-its on the page. I do this and they leave no residue on the pages.

even in study bibles I do not use highlighters or pens as they bleed through, at most Christian bookstores there are colored pencils made for marking bibles which highlite but do not damage the paper or bleed through. My set has lasted for 2 yrs, 5 colors, needs regular pencil sharpener. they are “waxier” than regular map pencils but not as liquidy as hiliters.

Personally, I feel that the Bible is not for the shelf or for display only. It is God’s personal message to you as he inspires ylu as and when you speak to Jesus.

Why not mark and write - It is you Father’s love words to you, (Unless it someone else, or Public Property!)

I like these highlighters. They do not bleed through Bible pages.

Yeah, the bleeding through is a big problem. I personally use a plain regular pencil, if I can’t resist marking something.
But I have that Bible, & I wouldn’t think of using highlights in it. Its too beautiful a Bible…I think I may have underlined 2 or 3 favorite verses, and now I wish I hadn’t done that much…
But colored pencils are a far better choice for marking a Bible–any Bible–than using the regular kind, which do a number on both sides of the page, & often a couple of more pages beyond that, where the yellow (or whatever) just spreads…

The highlighters I gave a link to are actually more like a wax pencil. The nice thing about them is that you can buy refills. They do not bleed through, and they are erasable. I have used the coloured pencils too.

I can never mark up my Ignatius 2CE or my leather-bound Oxford. So I mark up my older paperback Ignatius first edition instead.

I never got a 2nd edition. I’m waiting for the 3rd edition, which is in the works now. I’ll stick to the 1st edition until the corrections are made in the 3rd edition. There are not enough changes between the 1st and 2nd editions to make me buy a 2nd edition at this time.

Never heard of a 3rd edition. Where’s the source for this?

I agree with porthos11. The thread you are referring to only discusses the hopes by some that a 3rd edtion will be published soon. You are making a great leap when you say that a 3rd edtion IS coming soon.

Back to topic. My RSV SCE is on its way, it is also the leather version. I personally can’t imagine writing or highlighting in a leather version.
 
I stopped marking my bible years ago. I would mark something, and forget where it was.

I suggest you use your new bible for meditation, and a cheap one (or free one) to mark up.
