A comment thread was started, most of the comments making offensive remarks towards the pro-life community, calling them uneducated, backwards, ********s ect.

In my opinion, abortion is one of the easiest things to argue against, out of all the Catholic social teachings that have become accepted in secular society. But the thing is, I haven’t spoken to this girl in more than 4 years, not since the 6th grade, and I didn’t know her extremely well even then. If I comment it will be a bit…awkward.

I started to type up this:
*Not to stick my nose in places it doesn’t belong, but the tricky thing about the abortion debate is that it entirely revolves around when life begins. We have all agreed as a society that it is wrong to end human life, so the question we are really debating over is whether or not a fetus lies under the definition of human life.

Whether you are educated, uneducated, religious, atheist, kindhearted or a jerk, there is a wide variety of opinions about when life begins. And to a person who believes that life begins at conception, abortion is quite frankly murder. And they will react accordingly.

I will not excuse the more uncharitable comments brought about in this article, but rather I would like to bring a new light to how and why people can feel so vicious about this particular subject. *

I would rather have an awkward conversation than a failure to stand up against blatant murder, I think. And I think you will all agree with that, too. Do you think I ought to post it? Do you think I need to post it?

I’m feeling a little bit conflicted and I would not like to re-enforce certain stereotypes if you know what I mean.

Firstly, that response is great. It’s tone is charitable and intelligent, and it gets the point across. If you are going to post it, just know that I think your response is great.

Now on whether you should or not, I would say yes because to stay silent is to condone the behavior. You don’t even have to respond afterwards really. Just post that one comment and get the idea across that they aren’t infallible in their opinion. As long as you remain charitable, I think it’s something you should do. Too many children are murdered every day, and even if we are belittled it’s better than to stay silent.

You remind me of myself. One of the first times I engaged in abortion debate, I was 14, in my Catholic School uniform, when a friend of my mother’s tried to tell me that abortion was a ‘choice’ when she overheard me talking to my mother about the topic. I couldn’t believe the audacity for her to say that to me when she herself was Catholic and I went to Catholic school with her daughter. I took her to school right then and there. Right or wrong, charitable or not, I did it.
And I think the woman was so taken aback that I challenged her back that she wasn’t prepared for the discussion. I was never the type to argue with adults, so I think she was shocked. I wasn’t nasty, but I didn’t give an inch. My mother just let me go. She told me later that I was right and that she wouldn’t stop me from defending innocent life, even against her friend.
I believe if more of us seized upon the opportunity for discussion, we wouldn’t have abortion today.
So if you are so inclined…go for it.

Give it to them with all guns! You may not convince a soul, but it sure looks good on your resume when you go up before the Lord!

I would comment if for no other reason than to just annoy them. 😃

Peace and All Good!!

That is an excellent response. It’s intelligent, charitable and measured. I agree with what’s been said-you my not convince a person but at least you’ll have done you’re bit & with a response like that you’ll certainly show that opponents of abortion are not "uneducated, backwards, ********s ect. " but are quite capable of clear thinking & the use of reason.

:blessyou:

Pretty sure nothing you say could be more obnoxious than the comments under the actual article. My favourite was the one that said the Catholic Church has only opposed abortion for the last 500 years when it decided it needed more followers/money. I guess St Augustine (who wrote against it in the 5th century) must have lived to be about 1100 years old then

Sorry Methuselah, there’s a new record holder for the greatest age ever known :D. St Augustine outdid even your great age

In your final sentence, I might use the word “passionate” rather than “vicious.” Otherwise, it sounds good. 👍

I think you should follow the promptings of the Spirit as to whether or not to post. For me, it would depend on the type of relationship I had with the person at the time. If our relationship was cordial enough where I thought it might make them pause and reflect for a moment, I would post. If we were more or less acquaintances who barely spoke to each other but somehow ended up as Facebook friends anyway, then I’m not sure I’d bother.

A short kind of apologetic defense that I found somewhere on this forum goes something like this:
If it’s growing, isn’t it alive?
If it has human parents, isn’t it human?
And human beings like you and me are valuable, aren’t we?

Hope this helps with your defense.

I like that! That’s a very succinct way to make the point.

OP, that’s a great response. If you decide to post it, be confident that you hit the tone exactly right (though I’d endorse the ‘passionate’ for ‘vicious’ swap)!

If you do want to enter the discussion about abortion, you could ask them why they don’t consider a foetus human life. Here are some answers you could use to some of the most common points:

It isn’t fully developed? - Neither is a child.
It isn’t self-aware? - Neither is a newborn baby.
Doesn’t feel pain? - Embryos can feel pain at 8 weeks, but there are some adults who cannot feel pain at all (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congenital_insensitivity_to_pain)
Physically dependent? - So are conjoined twins.
Not alive? - There are varying definitions, but the common one uses 7 characteristics: homeostasis, organization, metabolism, response to stimuli, growth, reproduction, and adaptation. A zygote meets these criteria just as well as an infant.

If they mention that a baby under 6 weeks doesn’t have a heartbeat:
The heart starts beating at around 6 weeks, but does someone with an artificial heart cease to be human?

And you could ask:
What counts as human? What criteria do you use to determine whether something is human or not? Is it DNA? If so, as soon as the sperm implants the egg, the newly formed organism has a unique set of human DNA. Is it intelligence? If so, newborns are not human. Is it body structure? If so, amputees are not human.
