I’ve been going to Confession monthly since last Summer. On my first Confession, I mentioned in a general way, a sin I had committed. I was thinking of a specific incident when I spoke generally, but have been wondering if I truly have been absolved of the specific instance. I certainly had the incident in mind while I was confessing and was truly repentant, but should I go back and let the priest know that I am sorry for that specific sin?

When the priest said, “I absolve you of all your sins…” that’s just what happened. You don’t need to be overly scrupulous about confessing details of past sins. However, you can certainly mention it at your next confession so that your confessor may advise you and help you with anything that is still bothering you about it, as well as give you absolution for any sins you’ve since committed as well as any appropriate penance(s).

Unless you wilfully witheld the sin out of embarrasment or for any reason when you made your confession it was forgiven, however if you now remember it you should, not must, but should confess it.
