Should I confess or let it go?

At confession yesterday Father asked me after I was done telling him my sins “Are you sorry” At the time he asked, I questioned in my mind if I was sorry. I know I wish I had never done the things I confessed but I did not feel as bad about them as I did the day before confession. But what slipped out of my mouth was “Very sorry”. I can honestly say I had imperfect contrition for what I did, but I do not think I can honestly go as far as to say I was “Very sorry” yet that is what I said. Should I go back to confession and confess to lying about my confession, or should I just let it go? I think I tend to be scrupulous but I do not want to use that as a excuse to just dismiss this situation. I also received communion after confession. So I need to know if I was wrong in doing so. Thank you.

Hi,

Being sorry for one’s sins is not necessarily a matter of feeling. Being truly sorry lies in the intellect and will. If you regret having sinned and are determined to try to not sin again–this qualifies as being sorry–possibly even very sorry.

You did not lie. What came out was stronger than you would have intended had you had enough time to think about it. You certainly do not have to re-confess.
