I’m 22 years old; my boyfriend is a Christian who is 19. He loves the Lord. I mean truly LOVES him, he cries sometimes during worship, and his relationship with God is simply beautiful. He is not Catholic though. He doesn’t believe that the Virgin Mary is “that great,” he doesn’t think we should confess our sins to a priest, he doesn’t like the fact that we baptize as babies, he is not a virgin but he loves that I am, and he has never so much as hinted that he would like me to have pre-marital sex with him. He never talks about Catholicism negatively but he mentions it, and it honestly hurts me. I know there aren’t A LOT of differences between Catholicism and Christianity – after all we are all Christians because we believe and love Christ – but we plan on getting married and having children someday. I can’t get married to someone who doesn’t believe the EXACT same thing I do! What about our children? I get so sad when someone says they don’t really have a religion “my dad is Catholic, my mom is Mormon so I guess I’m kind of in between.” I would never want that for my children! I want them to be baptized as babies but he seems hesitant about that. I want nothing more than children who are raised with strong beliefs and an immense love for God. My boyfriend says that he will convert to Catholicism for us to get married but that he could never really consider himself Catholic. He says he doesn’t like names he just loves Christ. And that he doesn’t care if I’m Catholic because it’s not so different from Christianity. But Catholicism is so structured I could never see it this way. Of course I don’t want to strain his relationship with the Lord; it is already a beautiful relationship. Also I don’t want his family to resent me for being that Catholic girl who changed their son! I want to show him Catholicism is beautiful and we can love God just like his Christian friends do. What can I do to show him how great it can be to be a Catholic if there aren’t many differences?
