I think that this is what Richard means. Accordnig to the 1997 document issued by the Congregation for the Clergy:Richard1:
Please explain yourself about EMHC’s should not be receiving communion apart from the laity…Is this what you mean…After our parish “makes the sign of peace” all EMHC’s make their way up to the altar and we all receive communion from the priest there; is this what you are referring to…
I apologize for my ignorance on the matter!
To avoid creating confusion, certain practices are to be avoided and eliminated where such have emerged in particular Churches:
— extraordinary ministers receiving Holy Communion apart from the other faithful as though concelebrants;
— association with the renewal of promises made by priests at the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday, as well as other categories of faithful who renew religious vows or receive a mandate as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion;
The part I highlighted in bold means that as an EMHC, you are not to come up to the sanctuary before the celebrant has communicated. There had been many instances where, during the Agnus Dei, the celebrant distributed the Body of Christ to the EMHCs and then, after the “Domine non sum dignus-Lord, I am not wrothy”, everyonie consumed the Sacred Host. In other words, the EMHCs were “acting” as though they were concelebrants by consuming the Body of Christ at the same time the celebrant did so.— the habitual use of extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion at Mass thus arbitrarily extending the concept of “a great number of the faithful”.
