Should I cover my crucifixes with purple cloth when this is done in church over Passiontide? And if I dont have purple specificaly, is there another color I may use?
A bit of information- in the old Sarum Rite (a medieval liturgical Rite in England, very similar to the Classical Roman Rite) crucifixes would be covered throughout LentI had always done it throughout Lent, but this year I discovered that the Church only does it Holy Thursday - Holy Saturday. Nonetheless, I will definately be removing my crucifixes and replacing them with a cross that has a purple ribbon, or the crosses I made out of the palms I have saved from last years Palm Sunday mass.
That sort of defeats the purpose? The idea is to cover the Crucifixes and statues that are in open public (livingroom, family room) areas not the ones in private areas.I use disposable plastic purple tablecloths that I cut up use to cover some images and crucifixes. I don’t cover every crucifix though.I usually don’t cover the ones in my living room and family room because it just doesn’t look right.
With regard to the many image and crosses I do cover, I uncover some of them at the Gloria of the EWTN broadcasted Papal Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday and the rest after I go to the Easter Vigil. If I don’t go to the Vigil then I just uncover them at the Vatican’s Gloria.
I should have mentioned, the images covered are primarily in my personal prayer room since that is the place I try to make follow seasonal customs (like no flowers during Lent and Advent). I only covered the cross and the Two Hearts image im my room as a symbolic gesture. That sort of defeats the purpose?
