Should I feel guilty about a sin after confession?

After I confess a sin, should I feel guilty about it? For example, if I gossiped about someone and that resulted in some sort of huge argument and friendships were damaged but I confess it and the matter eventually clears up, should guilt still be felt?

If that guilt reminds you to be more careful in the future over what you choose to say about someone else, it can be a good thing. What you should not do is despair. Despair is the feeling that God cannot forgive one’s sins and that one can never be returned to a right state with God. That is the feeling that is destructive to personal sanctity and the temptation to it should be firmly rejected.
