Should I get a day job, while communicating with a community about a vocation?

I don’t have vacation days, but I do shift, wage-based work. That means I can request days off, since my schedule changes week-by-week anyways. That makes it possible to request off four days, like I did for a week from this coming weekend, so I can visit communities and talk with their vocations directors.

Try to find a job that will give you that flexibility, or at the very least a rather regular schedule so you can at least make weekend visits.

In prayer.

Thanks! That’s the trick, eh? Should I refuse a full time job? If this goes much further, I might end up getting an apartment and things will get much more complex. There is one part-time job I applied for, but it only pays $7-9 an hour, depending on factors.

You’ll have to take into consideration all the personal factors of your life. I’m lucky enough to be able to live with my mother and stepfather while I’m discerning, so the fact I’m only making eight dollars an hour isn’t an issue for me, and I’ve actually been able to save quite a bit of money since I started this job back in June.

I am praying for you, that God will guide you to what you need to do and bless you, that by His grace you may be able to follow His call - whether it be because of or despite the living and working conditions into which you enter.

In Christ’s enduring love and hope.

Thank you! I also have that convenience. I might have jumped too quickly at the full-time jobs not to put all my eggs in one basket, but it might strangulate my discernment process. I should go at this with no complications. Still, for those wanting a communal, devout Catholic environment and don’t have the convenience we’ve had, I’ve been told great things about the Madonna House by one who stayed there, at least at the original locale. It would save money, but getting around could be tough getting to and fro from there, if your cash is low. If you are white and a native English speaker and need to build up about $10,000 (without expensive tastes), you can teach English in S. Korea, but it’s no walk in the park.

What is Madonna House? is this like a discernment house where guys live while discerning their vocation?

It’s a lay community of men and women. They are like a religious community (I don’t know what vows or consecrations they make), but guests can stay for month, but they help out regularly. They could join the community. There are other locations, but i think those are just where the members are sent, but i could be wrong.
